LetterLetter from John W.'s nephew John C. Houghton to Seth Bryant (a shoe and leather industry historian):
Lynn, MA 29 Jul 1890

Mr. Seth Bryant

Dear Sir: I send you today a copy of the article which you saw when you were in Lynn a while since. I find that Mr. J. W. Houghton was born in Harvard, Mass., Aug. 11, 1787; he died in Augusta, Georgia, Feb. 27, 1851. The amount given to New England relatives was about $23,000. The article in the will respecting his slaves is as follows:
Item 13 -- "It is my will and desire, and I so direct, that all the negro slaves, male and female, of which I may die seized and possessed , with their future issue and increase, be removed by my executor to the colony of Liberia, in Africa, under the regulations, and with the assistance of the American Colonization Society, within two years after my decease, provided their free and voluntary consent is first obtained; and to carry out this item of my will fully into effect, I give to my executor $4000, to be expended by him in defraying their expenses to the sea-board, and in furnishing them with such an outfit as I have expressed to him orally."
The paper, of which a copy is sent with this, gives further information, and in connection with what you already know from a personal acquaintance with Mr. Houghton, will form a basis for a biographical sketch, should you feel disposed to write one. Mr. Houghton made his visit to New England in 1845. Very truly yours.

From: [email protected] To: [email protected] Subject: RE: J.W. Houghton

Mr. Vella,

Thank you for the information.

I do have a great deal more information on Mr. Houghton's impact on Augusta. I decided the easiest way to get it to you it to send you a copy of an article that appeared in the December, 16, 2000 edition of the Augusta Chronicle:

*****
Web posted Saturday, December 16, 2000
Amber Cobern was a little nervous about attending Houghton Elementary School this year.

John W. Houghton, after whom the 333 Greene Street school was named, died in 1851 and is entombed in the school's foyer.

The 84-year-old school will close its doors forever Tuesday as the pupil populations of Craig and Houghton elementary schools merge under the roof of the newly constructed Craig-Houghton Elementary School on Fourth Street.

In his will, Mr. Houghton bequeathed $4,000 to the Augusta City Council to start a free school for poor children. Houghton Institute opened in 1851 (Footnote: The information I have is this original school was built at #69 Greene Street) but was destroyed in the Great Fire of 1916, along with more than 700 downtown buildings.

The second school, designed by noted Augusta architect Lloyd Preacher, was constructed the same year. Mr. Houghton's remains were moved from his Gracewood farm and reinterred beneath the tile floor of the foyer beyond the wrought iron gates. On the wall above the site is a plaque dedicated to his memory.

As for Mr. Houghton's final resting place, it will remain the same for now.

To move the body would require the school board to find any heirs of Mr. Houghton and seek their permission, said the school board's spokesman.

*****

In 2002, the Board of Education sold the building to a development company in Atlanta. The company planned to convert the building to luxury lofts, but has now dropped the plan and the school is once again up for sale.

Mr. Vella, I'm trying to locate both a copy of Mr. Houghton's will (I have placed a call to the Clerk of Probate Court, and she is searching), -and- any living relative.

As someone unschooled in genealogy research, may I ask a dumb question? "Endnotes" #9 says Brooke, Georgia Wills, p. 97.
What does that mean?

Just so you know, I'm pursuing this information as both a reporter and a resident of the 300 block of Greene Street. (Opposite side from the school.) It's a beautiful building that has been allowed to fall into disrepair. I'm not an Augusta native, I did not have children attend the school, no connection other than a desire to see it saved.

I'm sorry this message is so lengthy, but I wanted to provide you as much information as I can.

Thank you again for your help,
Dana
