Barnes Man is approaching century mark

Hiram T. Houghtan has celebrated his 93rd birthday at his home in Barnes Sept. 7th. Comrades Captain Henry V. Partidge, L. B. Learn, Henry Howard, B. D. Tome Isaac Culbertson, A. Glendenning, John Reeger, Charles Lyon and .J. R. Mitchell, (nine of the surviving members of Co. H. 10th Pennsylvaniia Reserves, with whom Mr. lfoughton served three years during the war, spent the day with him.

After telling stories and recounting reminiscences of th.e war, they were called to the dining room, where covers were laid for ten. After they had partalen of a bountiful dinner, J. R. Mitchell with appropriate remarks, and in behalf of the surviving members of Co. H. presented Mr. Houghton with a beautiful solid gold "regulation badge" watch charm.

Captain Partridge who came from bis home in Norwich, Vermont, especially to attend this birthday anniversary, then made some very impressive remarks, after which Mrs. F. E. Foster read a beautiful and very interesting letter written by George W. Trask to be read to his comrades on this occasion.

They then elected officers, passed some resolutions and adjourned to the porch where they were joined by comrades, A. Secor, Jerry Borden, James Blake, and Warren man of Sheffield members of Rudolph Post of which Mr. Houghton is also a member. Mr. Secor then made the presentation to Mr. Houghton of a large and very handsome leather covered rocker, a gift from Rudolph Pratt Post. It was a red letter day to all present as well as to tile comrades who seem bound together by the strongest ties. They missed George W. Demming who was unable to be present on account of his duties as sexton in Oakland cemetery.

Mr. Houghton, although a little feeble in body, keeps his mind: bright and we wish him many more happy birthdays.17

ResearchFrom 2nd ggrandson Joe Stout: This is an extract from an article I found about it.

"No other family assumes a more important role in establishing the early history of the township than the Houghtons. Hiram Thompson Houghton, born in 1816, progenitor of the family, was the son of Josiah Houghton of Aurelius, Cayuga County, New York. The father died when Hiram was fourteen years of age, leaving him as the eldest son of a family of six. In 1837, at the age of twenty-one, he settled in Cherry Grove with his uncle, Thomas Farnsworth.

Hiram Houghton's first wife was Sally Ann Aber, daughter of Silas Aber who settled in Cherry Grove in 1833 near the Farnsworth farm..36 Silas Aber appears first on the tax list for the year 1838, assessed for lots 661 and 669, and the following year for an additional lot, 695. The Abers came from New York State, and after the death of his wife, Silas Aber returned to New York and left his property to his son who remained on it until his death in 1873. The property went to his heirs."57 The 1850 census names the following Abers in Cherry Grove Township: Henry C. (Cooper), born 1816, New York; Anna E., born 1816, Connecticut; Darius, born 1836, New York; and Calistia, born 1839, New York. Darius held Civil War service."

The children of Hiram and Sally Ann Houghton were! Phoebe - I. born 1842; William H.. born 1844; Mary Ann, born 1846; and Ann Eliza, born 1849. Hiram-T, Houghton married as his second wife, Jane Ann Farnsworth, and their children were: Ada A., born 1851; Marvil M. A., born 1853; and Asa Josiah, born 1855. Both Hiram and his son William H. served in the armed forces during the Civil War. The diary notes of the father, dating from 1854 to 1877, and his letters are given attention in chapters following. The diary l constitutes a most important and significant addition to our local history.

A complete transcription of the original diary was made by the late Byron Barnes Horton, and it is from this copy 'that the abstracts as they appear herein have been produced. The group of excerpts are presented through the kind permission of Miss Ariel Houghton of Barnes, Pennsylvania, and Mrs. L. C. Hassinger, Bristol, Virginia, who has in her possession the original diary copy. Miss Houghton and Mrs. Hassinger are granddaughters of Hiram T. Houghton, the compiler. Information concerning the Houghton family in the early days of the township has been previously related in Chapter V."21

RetirementMarvil Barnes:
Friday, July 30

The Renewal Department will lose one of its most loved co-workers when MM VIL B M NES retires to a bright new world of leisure and travel that is opening up to her.

Marvil was born in Barnes, Pennsylvania, a town named in honor of her family. She received her education and business training in the East. This qualified her to enter into her position of Recorder when her family moved to Los Angeles and she started her career with Pacific Mutual on July 1, 1920. She has been in charge of the Recording Section in the Renewal Department and has devoted her energies and abilities to helping many new employees over their first hurdles, thusleaving a host of friends.

When she leaves here she plans to make an extended visit "in the old home town". She will enjoy renewing acquaintance with her many friends and relatives.

When the leaves turn red Marvl1 will be found motoring leisurely through many states including Missouri, Tennessee, Kentucky and the New England States. She will eventually travel on into Canada accompanied by her sister, Myrna and her brother-in-law. True to form, they will unerringly find the quaint hideaway for the enjoyment of many a fine dinner for Marvil is noted as a connoisseur of foods.

While travel lures Marvil to far places, after all her home is her first love, and after her tour, the enjoyment of her family, especially her niece and nephew, children of Dr. and Mrs. Stout of Pasadena, will draw her back to Southern California, and to her Pacific Mutual friends and new activities her leisure time will make possible.

Take with you our best wishes for much happiness in the future, Marvil, and remember that we shall miss you6'
DeathJan 29, 1948Watts, Los Angeles, Los Angeles Co., CA, USA1

NoteThe children of this marriage all left for California about 1900 to work in the oilfields, while Marvil Houghton Barnes stayed in Barnes until about 1913, when she moves to Los Angeles to be with her children.5
