Biography

"She was two weeks old when mother died. Sent with her sister Abbie to live with their Aunt Marilla Houghton Gallup at LeRoy, NY. They attended Ingham University there till June 1860, and attended for the year 1860-1861, Ontario Female Seminary at Canandaigua, NY., Abbie graduating there in June 1861. During their stay with the Gallups, the two girls visited other relatives such as the Henry Oscar Houghtons in Cambridge and the Albert Gallatin Houghtons in Brooklyn, during their vacation periods. At the outbreak of the Civil War, in the summer of 1861 they returned to Tuscaloosa, Ala. Abbie Scott Vaughn often told of that trip South. it was on the last train to run before the start of the war and President Lincoln had issued a warning that this would be the last opportunity for any Southerners to return home. In fact the train actually was fired on during the journey South."; p. 57, "...Stella being younger did not complete her course, but graduated from Summerfield Female Academcy in Tuscaloosa, Ala."
