BiographyBiography: Per Merritt Mullen, 2007: Matt used to joke about his 'kinsman', Lord Houghton, in the 'old country'.

My great-grandparents, Mathew HOUGHTON and Jemima BELL, migrated from Ireland to Quebec about 1847 (probably separately, although they lived within about 10 miles of each other in Ireland), where they married in 1852. They lived in Quebec City until late 1860 (where Mathew was a tavern keeper on Rampart Street), when they moved to Cincinnati, Ohio, and soon after to Carrollton, Kentucky, where Mathew and Jemima owned and operated an inn. Mathew was mayor of Carrollton for one term. They were Protestant (Anglican/Presbyterian). In Ireland and Quebec, the name is spelled "Oughton" (no "H") in a few records, but is consistently "Houghton" in the USA. They had eleven children, but only one of the boys (William) survived to adulthood and lived to marry and have a child and that child was a girl, so that ended the Houghton surname. They have many descendants with other surnames. Matt used to joke about his 'kinsman', Lord Houghton, in the 'old country'. There was a Houghton family of "landed gentry" living in Counties Wexford and Waterford, Ireland, but it is not known if Mathew is related to that family.

Mathew HOUGHTON was born 15 Aug 1927 at Hollyfort (near Gorey), Co. Wexford, Ireland. I have not found his parents or siblings and I do not know if he came to Quebec alone or with other members of his family. There is a Thomas HOUGHTON and an Albert Alfred HOUGHTON living in Quebec at the same time as Mathew, and they are possibly his brothers or cousins He married Jemima BELL 8 Jun 1852 at the Wesleyan Methodist Church in Quebec City. He died 26 Aug 1877 in Carrollton, Carroll County, Kentucky. Mathew and Jemima (and some of their children) are buried at the Oddfellows Cemetery in Carrollton. Their gravestones provide their birth and death dates, as well as Mathew's birthplace in Ireland.

Jemima BELL was born 10 Sep 1829 at Carnew, Co. Wicklow, Ireland, and died 1 Jul 1907 in Carrollton, Kentucky. Her parents were Edward and Elizabeth BELL (Elizabeth's maiden name unknown). Edward's occupation was smith. Jemima had siblings named Thomas, Ann, Joshua, John, James, Eliza, Sarah Jane, Susan, and Mary. The whole Bell family is listed on a document "Intention to Emigrate" dated 1847, as a result of the clearing of Earl Fitzwilliam's estate in County Wicklow, because of the potato famine. Family history says the Earl provided passage to Quebec, however, I have found only Jemima in Quebec. Some of the other siblings are found in Cincinnati, OH. I have searched the 1851 census for Quebec City and surrounding counties and have not found either the Houghtons or the Bells (but portions of the 1851 census are apparently missing). Jemima died on1 Jul 1907 in Carrollton, Carroll Co., KY, USA.

Per Merritt Mullen, 1996: Migrated from Ireland to Quebec City, CAN, shortly after marriage. They lived there for about 10 years; their older children were born there. He was a tavern owner there. About 1860 they moved to Cincinnati, then to Henry Co KY, finally settling in Carrollton, Carroll Co, KY about 1866, where they operated a hotel. Matt died there in 1977. They had eleven children, but only one of the boys (William) survived to adulthood and lived to marry and have a child and that child was a girl, so that ended the Houghton surname. They have many descendants with other surnames. While in Ireland, name was spelled Oughton. The H was addded while they were in Quebec (spelled both ways in Church records). Matt used to joke about his 'kinsman', Lord Houghton, in the 'old country'.

He was mayor of Carrollton for one term.

I have searched the 1851 census for Quebec City and surrounding counties and have not found either the Houghtons or the Bells (but portions of the 1851census are apparently missing).2

Research1939At the time of the Memorial Day celebration on May 30, 1939, the cemetery association held a service to dedicate the new stone pillars at the Gridley Cemetery center gate and the newly planted landscaping to the old settlers of the Gridley community. Reverend Osceola McNemar, a pioneer of this community, officiated. Eleven of the older Gridley families had cooperated to place several hundred evergreens and shrubs throughout the cemetery and had erected the stone gate pillars. The inscription on the north pillar reads: “This memorial gateway has been erected and dedicated to the memory of the founders and organizers of this community by their descendants 1939.” Each family helping with this project placed a name on the south pillar and are as follows: W. D. Castle, Jasper Gilmore, James M. Michell, W. H. Boies, C. F. Hoobler, Sr., W. J. Niergarth, Richard Breese, Sarah Breese, John Pfeffinger, Pauline A. Pfeffinger, Kent family, Thomas B. Houghton, Sarah J. Houghton, and J. F. Ropp. Although this gateway is no longer used as an entrance, the gate and pillars silently serve to honor our early pioneer families.10
