John went to a board of selectman meeting to complain about the condition of Fish St. in front of his establishment (he was a sail maker) wanting the counsel to authorize repair. Two of the officers of the "Selectmen" who were present on the rolls were John Adams and Oliver Wendall Holmes.
Minutes of that meeting were:
The Committee Appointed the 7th of June to view the nuisance in Fish Street complained of by Mr. John Hooton having met upon the spot, viewed the same, and considered the circumstances of it. Report thereon as follows: that it is their opinion, the said (326) nuance can not otherwise be removed, than by carrying the water to the northward into the towns slip at the lower end of Wood Lane, and having advised with Mr. Thornton the Paver respecting the charge of doing it, find it will cost forty pounds or thereabouts which charge the committee apprehend ought to be born by the town.3
