mr & mrs ernest elben lived at 131 so. state st., salina, utah. their lot was about 160 feet wide (est) x 300 feet deep. there was a driveway along the north side and a large vegetable garden along the south. at the back door there was a cellar dug into the earth where they stored the canned vegetables, etc. at the back of the yard there was a coal shed with a tin roof..
ernest worked on many of the farms around southern utah shearing sheep, blacksmith and repair work. their transportation was a harley davidson motorcycle with sidecar. ernest stood about 6' 5", and as i remember, was very thin. he had long, handlebar moustache.
ernest elben was the first from salina, utah to volunteer and serve in the spanish-american war in 1898.³

Laurel Elben graduated from Wasatch University in 1924 . She began a career in teaching in one room schools at mack, fruita and delta, colorado. in 1931, frank and laurel moved to sacramento, california, then to jackson, amador co. frank began working for safeway stores and was transferred to manteca, modesto, and san andreas california. there, laurel obtained her teaching credentials for california and began teaching in a one room school at campo seco. she taught until they purchased a grocery store in mokelumne hill in 1943. in 1988 laurel suffered a stroke, leaving her with severe short term memory loss. she was hospitalized at san andreas convalescent hospital.²
