A loving husband, father and grandfather, Robert died January 14, 2014 from complications due to Parkinson's disease. He was 80 years old.

Bob, known affectionately to family as Bud or Buddy, was the second child born to Carolyn and William Houghton on November 27, 1933 in Pasadena, California. He attended South Pasadena High School. After two years in the army and graduation from Claremont Men's College in 1959, he met and married Barbara, his loving wife of 54 years, proposing to her under the Rose Bowl Stadium sign.

Raising his family in San Carlos, Bob achieved his greatest career success with The Hartford but his family was most important above all. His gregarious personality served him well as scoutmaster, little league coach, soccer referee, school board member and treasurer for many local civic activities.

A prankster and jokester with a quick laugh, he knew how to make others feel welcome and at ease, loved hosting the 4th of July block party, blaring Swing Era music from the stereo and driving the neighborhood kids to Oakland A's games.

Bob is survived by his wife Barbara; son Dennis (Liz); son Dan: grandchildren; Ethan, Olivia, Will, Jared, and Lily; brother Bill (Candy); brother Michael (Susan) and sister Sue (Bert). He also leaves behind nieces and nephews; Patrick, Marina, Joel, Keir, Robin, Devon, Jesse and their spouses and children.

Dad, we knew you worried about us because you cared and we know that you are now at peace. Salute per tutti, Anche tu, Grazie tante.

A memorial will be held on Saturday, March 15 at 1:30pm at the Swedenborgian Church, 3200 Washington Street, San Francisco. Donations can be made to American Parkinson Disease Association.

Billy Calhoun Houghton
Feb. 24, 1930-May 9, 2012

Billy Calhoun Houghton, 82, passed away Wednesday, May 9, 2012, at home after a long illness. He was born February 24, 1930, in Grand Rapids, Michigan. He is survived by his wife, Phyllis. They celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary last November. He is also survived by his children, Sandra (Robert) Hudson, Loretta (Gaylan) McColley, Gary (Teresa) Houghton, and Nancy (Jack) Balcom; his sister, Bonney Abbey; and brother, John (Susie) Houghton, as well as 17 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Eva Houghton; sister, Naomi Helms; daughter, Pamela Lance; grand-daughter, Laura Zemer; and brother-in-law, Gordon Abbey.
Billy worked hard throughout his life, farming, construction work, and driving bus for Lakeview Community Schools. He was baptized and served as one of Jehovah's Witnesses over 60 years.
Billy loved bible study and his ministry. He also enjoyed traveling, fishing, baseball, and visiting with family and friends. He was dearly loved and will be greatly missed.
A Memorial Service for Billy has been planned for Saturday, May 19, 2012 at 3 p.m. at the Brigham Funeral Chapel in Lakeview, Michigan with Terrence Herd officiating.
