Deceased Name: JOHN HOUGHTON HOWARTH
Feb. 28, 1913 ~ March 24, 2008

Longtime Anchorage resident John Houghton Howarth, 95, died March 24, 2008, at the Mary Conrad Center.

A private family memorial service will be held in Anchorage.

Chaplain Howarth was born Feb. 28, 1913, in Alexandria Bay, N.Y.

He attended the University of Rochester and continued living in Rochester, N.Y., where he worked as a designer for Bausch and Lomb and Sibley's until his move to Alaska in 1970.

Shortly after arriving in Alaska, he became an Episcopalian chaplain in the Order of St. Luke the Physician, serving the public until the time of his passing.

He also worked for the Anchorage Museum of History and Art.

As a professional artist and designer, Chaplain Howarth continued to draw and paint and enjoy the arts in Alaska. He lived in Cooper Landing for a brief time and spent the rest of his career in Anchorage.

"Everyone remembers Chaplain Howarth's loving kindness and ceaseless prayers for individuals and for the world," his family recalled.

He is survived by three daughters and their families, Gloria DiAngelo of Rochester, Phyllis McKay of Newburg, Md., and Lani Howarth of San Diego, Calif; his brother, Phil Howarth; two nieces, Helen Howarth and Carol Howarth and their families, all of Anchorage; a third niece, Jean Howarth Lindberg and her family of California; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren throughout the Lower 48.

Friends who would like to send condolences may mail them to Lani Howarth, 933 Diamond St., No. 4, San Diego, CA 92109.
