ObituaryJun 18, 1939NY Times:
Bert Houghton, 72, Engineer, Is Dead Ex-Operating Superintendent of Brooklyn Edison Served Company for 22 years. Had Built Many Plants
Also a Designer of Electrical Machinery -- Developed Coast Defense Gun Carriages
Bert Houghton, who retired in 1934 as operating superintendent of the Brooklyn Edison Company after a distinguised career as a designer and builder of electrical power plants and electrical machinery, died yesterday in the Brooklyn Hospital, after a long illness, at the age of 72. His Brooklyn residence was 1,274 East Twenty-third Street, and his country home was in Pittsfield, Vt., his birthplace, to which he gave a park and a community center.
A poor boy, after attending the district grammar school, Bert Houghton worked his way through St. Johnsbury Academy, and then took a job to make the money necessary to put himself through Cornell, where he was graduated as a Mechanical and Electrical Engineer in 1892. Long afterward he served for eight years on the board of governors of the Cornell Club of New York, and for four years as the club's treasurer.
Mr. Houghton's first professional employment was with E. D. Leavitt, a consulting engineer, of Cambridgeport, Mass., with whom he built cotton and woolen mills in Boston. After a period with the Calumet and Hecla Company he entered the motor department of the General Electric Company, then busily engaged in motorizing street cars.
During a visit to the government arsenal at Watertown, N.Y. Mr. Houghton became interested in the handling of big guns, with the result that he developed the first motor operated gun carriage ot be used on our coast defenses. Another achievement out of the main line of his work an electrically driven mail canceling machine, now used in our postoffices.
From 1898 to 1912 Mr. Houghton designed and built power plants in Boston, first for the Boston Electric Company, then for its competitor, the Boston Edison Company, and finally for the enlarged Boston Edison Company, formed by the merger of the two companies. His work in Boston during these years was marked by the introduction of many new ideas in this sphere of engineering.
Erected Plants in Boston
After joining the Brooklyn Edison Company in 1912 Mr. Houghton rebuilt two of its important plants, the Gold Street and Sixty-sixth Street Stations, in each case accomplishing the task of enlarging and improving the plants without halting their operation. In 1920 he was appointed operating superintendent and he remained in charge of all the Brooklyn Edison plants until his resignation on Oct. 10, 1934.
Mr. Houghton was on the governing board of the Fourth Unitarian Church, Brooklyn, and was a member of the American Society of of Mechanical Engineers, Electrical Engineering Society of boston and the Masons.
Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Olive W. H. Feerick of the Twenty-third Street address, Brooklyn; a granddaughter, and a sister, Mrs. Bess Fifield.
Funeral services will be held at 8 P. M. tomorrow in the funeral parlors at 187 South Oxford Street, Brooklyn. Burial will take place in Pittsfield.12
BurialPittsfield, VT, USA, 1867-193913
BiographyHe was bom in Pittsfield. Vt.. January 17, 1867. His parents were Loren B. and Josephine Durkec Houghton, and his father was a farmer. After attending district school at Pittsfield. Houghton entered St. Johnshury Academy in 1884. graduating in 1887. He had paid his own way through the Academy, and in order to replenish his funds he worked a year for the Washburn Mower Company of Worcester, Mass., before entering Cornell with the Class of 1892. He left the University in 1891 with a letter from Dr. Thurston to E. Leavitt, Consulting Engineer. Cambridge, Mass. on presentation of this letter, he was given employment as a draftsman and inspector by the company. Later he was assigned to do important work for the Calumet and Hecla Mining Company of Michigan, for the City of Boston and in the cotton and woolen mills of New England. Thus he gained a knowledge of how big undertakings were designed and carried out that was to prove valuable later. At about this time the first street cars were being equipped with electric motors in Boston. He became interested and entered the motor department of the General Electric Company.
