He enlisted as a Gunner’s Mate 3rd class aboard the battleship Vermont on September 12, 1910 [was listed on the USS Vermont in the 1910 census], and that he served on the USS Franklin on May 6, 1911. He enlisted again in Boston, Massachussetts, on April 9, 1917, and remained in service until his discharge on April 8, 1921. He volunteered to serve with the 218th Squadron of the Royal Air Force and in France served on the Von Steuben operating near Dunkirk. After the war ended he was promoted to Ensign and assigned aboard the German prize ship Pretoria. He served on the battleship USS Georgia at some point. Thereafter, he remained in service until his retirement as Chief Engineer, Great Lakes Naval Hospital in 1953.

SAN JOSE. Calif. — Hubert Scovllli Houghton. 82, of 792 Maeradas Ave., died in San Josa, Calif.. Monday. Houghton was retired as chief engineer of the U. S. Navy Hospital at the Great Lakes Naval raining Canter in Waukeagan, III. Ha resided In North Fort Myers. Fla., from 1954 to 1959. staying with son Arthur Houghton who died
recently. Another son, Warren Houghton, and Arthur's widow Lois reside In North Fort Myers. The elder Houghton still is member of the Rabe 0. Wilkinson Post 38, American Legion, of North Fort Myers. Funeral service will be Thursday, afternoon at the Lima- SalmonErlckson Funeral Home, 710 Willow St., in San Jose.
Other survivors include the widow. Mrs. Emily Houghton: four daughters. Mrs. Edna Leonard of Fullerton, Calif., Mrs. Betty Mac- Nanaway of San Francisco, Mrs. Marjorie Hartman of San Jose and Mrs. Grace Neyrinck of Waukeegan, III; another son. Walter Houghton of San Lorenzo: a sister. Mrs. Edna F. Houghton of Corpus Christi, Tex; 18 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

SAN JOSE. Calif — Mrs. Emily B. Houghton, 80. mother of Warren L. Houghton and the late Arthur S. Houghton of North Fort Myers, Fla., died Wednesday. Funeral service will be held at 2 pm. Saturday at the Lima. Salmon and Erickson Memorial Chapel. 710 Willow St.. In San Jose. Mrs. Houghton, widow of Herbert S. Houghton of San Jose, was a native of Brooklyn, N. Y. She was a member of the Waukegan. III., chapter of Royal Neighbors of America end the First Baptist Church and Legion Auxiliary in Waukegan.
Surviving are four daughters, Mrs. Betty Macmanaway of Cor- al Beach. Fla., Mrs. Grace Ney- rinck of Waukegan, Mrs. Marrle Hartman of San Jose and Mrs. Edna Leonard of Mission Viejo, Calif; and another son, Walter Houghton of Hayward. Calif., 18 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Dad served as Radio and Wireman for the US Army; a PFC; awarded ETO Ribbon with battle and campaign stars WWII attached to 17th Airborne. Mr. Houghton is survived by his wife of 46 years, Virginia Houghton; a daughter, Sherry W. Findley and husband, Laurel; Logann and Chris (grandchildren). Two sons, Earl W. Houghton, his wife Edith; Garret, Shelby, Shannon and Lacy (grandchildren). Brent Houghton (son); Sisters, Edna Leonard and Betty McManaway.

Houghton & Emily B. Kramer. A resident of California, she moved to Cape Coral in May 1970 and was a charter member and officer of the Fraternal Order of Eagles. She was preceded in death by her parents, brothers and sisters, and her late husband Finley R. McMan-away, and is survived by her sons, Bob of Clearwater, Terry of Mt. Pleasant, NC, Peter of Largo; daughter Melissa of Trinity; 10 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.

Margaret M. Houghton, 94, passed away peacefully Jan. 18, 2015, at her home in Hayward, CA.
Born in Elgin, Iowa, and raised in Waukegan, Illinois, Margaret has been a resident of San Lorenzo and Hayward for nearly 60 years. She worked for over 20 years in the San Lorenzo Unified School District and spent many years as Secretary to the District Superintendent. Known for her organizing skills, outgoing personality, and as an avid reader, she continued to coordinate events for school district retirees, the Dublin Senior Center Reading Club, bridge and numerous other groups up until her passing. She was a member of Castlewood Country Club for over 50 years.
In 1945 she married Walter T. "Sully" Houghton of Waukegan, Il. They shared over 50 years of married life.
Margaret is survived by her two sons, Timothy and James, Tim's wife Mary, and Jim's partner Richard Contreras. She was predeceased by her husband, Sully.
Margaret will be dearly missed by all she touched.
Family and friends are invited to attend a memorial service on Sunday, January 25, 2015, from 2 to 4 pm at Sorensen Chapel, 1140 B St., Hayward.
