ObituaryApr 13, 1940From Lyme Heritage Center, Date written 4/13/1940: Native of Lyme Expires Saturday
Heart Attack Fatal to Aged Chaumont Man, Funeral Services Held Tuesday Afternoon
Joseph H. Houghton, 90, retired farmer and horse dealer, died suddenly at his home in Chaumont Saturday evening at 6. He was stricken with a heart attack shortly after dinner. Mr. Houghton had been in failing health throughout the winter.
Born in the town of Lyme, January 20, 1850, the son of Hamilton and Maria Arnold Houghton, he had lived in the vicinity of Chaumont his entire life. In 1880 he married Margaret Robson, who survives. His wife is 76 years old. Until his retirement twenty years ago, Mr. Houghton was engaged for years in farming just outside the village of Chaumont. He also dealt in horses. Surviving besides his wife, are a grandson, Donald Smith, Parish and several great grandchildren. Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at 2:30 from the home with Rev. William Pullen, pastor of the Chaumont Methodist-Presbyterian church, officiating. Burial was made in the family plot in Cedar Grove cemetery, Chaumont. Mr. Houghton, who was the father of the late Mrs. Cesta Hurst, was well known in this village and had a host of friends here who will regret his passing. I have spoken on the telephone with Carol Smith whose husband is Leonard
Smith, son of Donald Houghton Smith.3
