Houghton, as Administrator of the goods, chattels and credits of Harriet
C. Houghton.

To the surrogate's court of Jefferson county:

The petition of E. Mark Houghton, residing at No. 680 Longfellow Ave,
Detroit , MI respectfully shows:

That Letters of administration of the goods, chattels and credits of
Harriet C. Houghton, late of the Village of Theresa, Jeff Co, NY , were
duly granted to your petitioner by the Surrogate's Court of Jeff Co, on
the 19th day of May, 1932, that your petitioner duly qualified is acting
as such administrator and that more than seven months has elapsed since
said letters were so issued to your petitioner.

That James H. Houghton, one of the distributees of Harriet C. Houghton,
died intestate on the 25th day of April, 1932 leaving his widow Mina A.
Houghton, and his children, Harriet H. Rogers, Eleanor J. Houghton,
Gertrude H. Houghton, Winnifred H. Busler, Marjorie Lathan, William G.
Houghton and Elmer D. Houghton, him surviving.

That letters of administration of the goods, chattels and credits of James
H. Houghton were duly issued by the Surrogate's Court of Jeff Co on 14th
day of Sept, 1932 to Mina A. Houghton and that said Mina A. Houghton duly
qualified and is now acting as such administrator.

That on the 12th day of May, 1932, by an instrument in writing duly
acknowledged, the said Harriet H. Rogers, Eleanor J. Houghton, Gertrude H.
Houghton, Winnifred H. Busler, Marjorie Lathan, William G. Houghton and
Elmer D. Houghton, assigned sold and transferred unto said Mina A.Houghton
all of their rights, interest and distributive shares in and to all of the
property, both real and personal of which said Harriet C. Houghton died
seized and possessed, which said assignment is presented herewith to be
filed and recorded and concurrently therewith executed and delivered a
deed of all of their several interests in and to the real estate of which
said Harriet C. Houghton died seized, to the said Mina A. Houghton.

Distinguished Pharmacologist

Was Director of Medical Research and Biological Laboratories of Parke, Davis & Company For 35 Years Until Retirement in 1929

Dr. Elijah Mark Houghton, 70, 680 Longfellow Ave., Detroit, Mich., internationally known pharmacologist and bacteriologist who died 12 Dec [1937], was a native of Jefferson County, uncle of Dr. W. G. Houghton of this city [Watertown, NY] and of Elmer D. Houghton, Town of Antwerp.

For 35 years from 1895 until his retirement in 1929 he was director of the medical research and biological laboratories of Parke, Davis & Company, for which concern he was a consultant.

Dr. Houghton was born upon a farm in the town of Antwerp, 29 April 1867 [son of William and Harriet Cornelia Simons Houghton - ds], and after receiving his education in the schools of that section matriculated at the University of Michigan, from which he received his Ph.C. [?] in 1893, and his M.D. in 1894.

In 1894-5 he was assistant pharmacologist there and then began his connection with Parke, Davis & Company in a directorial capacity.

Because he was a recognized authority in his line he was a lecturer at the Detroit College of Medicine from 1896 to 1901 and at the University of Michigan from 1902 to 1908

Dr. Houghton by reason of his special and exhaustive research, was considered an authority on ... [various medical and biological subjects].

As a delegate he had attended several international scientific congresses in the United States and abroad; was a member of ... [various medical an pharmacological associations].

He was a member of Corinthian lodge, F&AM, and of the Detroit Athletic club.

Dr. Houghton was married to Miss Jennie Hunt, 23 Aug 1892, and she predeceased him 25 Sep 1935. There are three children from the marriage, Mrs. William C. Allee of Birmingham, Ala., Mrs. Edward C. Boss of Huntington Woods, and Ralph H. Houghton of Detroit. Also, he is survived by his widow, Mrs. Alice Maude Whitehead Houghton, whom he married last April 6, and by a brother, Roy A. Houghton, Elbow, Saskatchewan.

Dr. Houghton had been seriously ill for the past three or four months from cancer of the liver. His funeral was held from the family home in Detroit, Dec. 15, Rev. C. B. Allen, D. D., pastor of the Metropoolitan Methodist Episcopal church, officiating, and burial was made in Evergreen cemetery, Detroit.

His funeral was attended by his nephew, Elmer D. Houghton of Antwerp, where Dr. Houghton retained possession of the homestead farm, which he visited several times each year.

When Dr. Houghton died in December, 1937, he left an estate totalling approximately $130,000 and had achieved world-wide recognition. For 35 years, from 1895 until his retirement in 1929, he was director of the medical research and biological laboratories of Parke, Davis & Co.1,4

BiographyDr. Houghton was born on a farm in the Town of Antwerp, Jefferson County, NY. After receiving his education in local schools he matriculated at the University of Michigan, from which he received his Ph. C. in 1893 and his M.D. in 1894. A recognized authority in his field, he was a lecturer at the Detroit College of Medicine from 1896 to 1901 and at the University of Michigan from 1902 to 1908.

By reason of his extensive research, Dr. Houghton was considered an authority on strychnine, tetanus, ergot aseptic, heart tonics, active
principle of suprerenal glands, chlotetone and brometone, preparation of antitoxins, aseptic preparations of digitalis, ergot, veratrum, viridi, anti-dysenteric serum, rabies, purgatives, hypnotics, diphtheria and tetanus anti-toxins, tuberculins and other biologic products.

Dr. Houghton was a delegate to several international scientific congresses in the United States and abroad. He was a member of the Society of American Bacteriologists, American Pharmaceutical Association, American Medical Association, American College of Physicians, Society of Immunologists, Association of the Study of Internal Secretions, National Tuberculosis Association, United States Pharmacopoeia Revision Committee, the Wayne County and Michigan State Medical Societies, and one-time Chairman of the biological section of the American Drug Manufacturers Association. He was also a member of the Corinthian Lodge, F. & A. M., and of the Detroit Athletic Club.

Dr. Houghton was twice married, first to Jennie Hunt, by whom he had three children, and who predeceased him by slightly less than two years. He was married to his second wife, Alice Maude Whitehead, nine months before he died from cancer of the liver. A shorter death notice in the same paper a few days earlier listed the cause of death as diabetes.

Among those in attendance at Dr. Houghton's funeral were his nephew Elmer D. Houghton of Antwerp, where Dr. Houghton retained possession of the homestead farm, which he visited several times a year.

Elijah Mark Houghton, M.D. E. Mark Houghton was born in New York in 1867. He came to Michigan in 1889 to attend the University of Michigan, obtaining degrees in both pharmaceutical chemistry and medicine. After his graduation in 1893, he began practice in Ann Arbor and continued to pursue research at the University. In 1895, Parke-Davis hired Houghton and Charles McClintock to establish a biology research lab, with the aim of developing and producing an anti-toxin to diphtheria, then a major public health scourge. They succeeded within a few months, and Houghton remained as Director of Medical Research at Parke-Davis, as well as lecturing at Detroit Medical College and the University of Michigan. In 1905, Houghton moved into 680 Longfellow, one of the first homes in Boston-Edison, where he lived until the late 1930s.

BiographyWilliam Douglas Houghton: JOSEPH WHITCOMB (1700-1792) and Damaris Priest were married on 20 Jan 1725. They had at least the following children registered at Lancaster: Abigail, b. 13 April 1728; Joseph, b. 15 March 1731/2; Benjamin, b. 1 Sept 1735; Benjamin, b. 29 Sept 1737;Jonathan Priest, b. 14 Jan 1740; bpt. 13 April 1740; Elijah/Elisha, b. 18 Oct 1742; Damaris, b. 21 May 1746; Philemon, b. 29 Oct 1748 (Administrator of his father's estate); and Abijah, b. 25 June 1751; bpt. 30 June 1751.



In about 1760, the family moved to West Swanzey, N. H., where he built a saw-mill and a grist-mill, making the privilege on which now stands the Stratton Mills and the Box and Bucket shops. He owned an extensive tract of land. When he settled in Swanzey, he was about sixty years of age, a man of experience and respectability. He died November, 1792, at the age of ninety-two years, and was buried in Swanzey; his wife died November 12, 1770.



Joseph Whitcomb fought in the French & Indian War, being In the expedition which laid siege to Louisburg in 1745. Joseph Whitcomb was Lieutenant in Company 4. of which John Warner was Captain and Samuel Willard, Colonel. In the Crown Point Expedition, 1755, he was Lieutenant. In the conquest of Canada, and in 1758, Joseph Whitcomb was Captain in Col. Timothy Ruggles' Regiment. Capt. Joseph Whitcomb died in Nov 1792, aged 92, and is buried at the Mount Caesar Cemetery, Swanzey, Cheshire, New Hampshire.
