BiographyThomas Knight Houghton left the family farm at the age of 17 to became, first, a tanner, and then a dry goods clerk. He was a member of various local organizations in Plymouth, including the volunteer fire department and the Plymouth Sax Horn Band; he was elected to two terms as county recorder between 1858 and 1866. In a map for Daniel McDonald's 1881 county history, he is shown as owner of a plot of 137.45 acres in section 21, south of Plymouth. After his term as recorder, he operated Houghton and Bro., a grocery store in Plymouth that was still in business in 1880. In 1857, Thomas Knight Houghton became the proprietor of Union Town, which had first been platted by his brother-in-law, Bayless L. Dickson. At his death, his father, John Houghton, appears to have been, with his son John W. (brother of Thomas K.) joint owner of half of Union Town.6

BiographyHx of Marshall Co., IN: "A prosperous farmer, stock-raiser and landowner in Union Township, Marshall County, Thomas Houghton is a native of Rush County, Indiana, born on the 4th of January 1829...
Thomas Houghton received his education primarily in the district schools of Union township, although his father took much interest in his mental improvement and taught him how to read. While still a boy he was apprenticed to a harness maker at Plymouth, and after completing his term returned to his father's farm, of which he assumed the management...Following his first marriage Mr. Houghton removed to the farm upon which he now resides, which at that time consisted of 160 acres, but which now comprises 327 acres, scientifically cultivated and thoroughly improved. He is also the owner of two other farms of 166 acres, all in Union Township. As to his fine homestead, it may be said the Mr. Houghton has cleared about 320 acres of it and made the improvements, which have made it so valuable and attractive as a country home. He is also a valued citizen in his civic relations to the community, having served for seven years as a trustee of Union Township. He is identified with the Masonic order and the I.O.O.F. in Union Township, and he and his wife are faithful members of the Methodist Episcopal Church in Culver, having been heavy contributors in the erection of the beautiful church in Culver."

John William Houghton: Because of a nasty law suit over the will of Thomas Houghton (D. 1918), there are some branches of the family that are still not speaking to each other!4

BiographyAuburn Courier, 8 Jan 1891: Among permanent settlers in the village of Auburn, was O. C. Houghton and family from New York. He bought the lots now owned by his widow and built a log house upon the rear part of them, calculating that with time would come the means to erect a better habitation nearer the street, and the present structure shows how he realized his purpose. He was a carpenter and besides other work, built Pyne's and Puffenberger's stores. A company was formed in 1857 and built the seam mill in the south end of town. The company failed and disposed of the property to Wesley Park and others who in turn sold to Houghton, who was successful, accumulated quite a sum for those times and sold the Sheets brothers by whom the mill was run for some years at fair profit. With his money, Mr. Houghton bought one hundred acres of good land of a Weaver, one mile mile west of town, lived there till his death when the family came to town.

DeKalb Co. IN Hx: In 1843, O. C. Houghton and family of New York, came to the settlement, and Houghton bought the steam mill owned by Wesley Park...This year is noted on account of the terrific hurricane which swept over DeKalb county...8
