CJV: My opinion that LEH is son of Daniel Houghton; LEH is in 1860 census with Sarah Houghton; both from NY and had law background since William was a judge in Hopkins County, Texas. Is it through Sarah Putnam, who is then living with L E H Houghton. their sister? Other members of the family have said William Lake did have a sister, Sarah and that she did marry a Dr. Putnam.

Derl Houghton: From information given by Cynthia's son, William Dudley Houghton, to Gayle Platz in early 1950's: " Cynthia was a slender prim woman and wore a tight corset all of the time. She was subject to fainting spells and at such times her husband would cut the laces to her corset and she would revive. One day in 1864 or 1865 while at home she noticed some visitors coming toward the house. She called to her little girl Luinda, to get the broom and sweep up some popcorn on the earthen floor. Luinda, probably wanting to see who was coming was a little slow, whereupon Cynthia seized the broom and hurriedly started to sweep and fell across the broom, dead. She knew how to weave flax, the only person in that community that did. She probably learned from her mother while living in Maine.⁵

Biography

The 1860 Davenport Directory shows James and Eliza Houghton living on Ripley Street, between 11th and 12th Street. According to the April 17, 1886 obituary of Eliza Houghton, that address was 111 Ripley Street and, James and his wife Eliza lived at this home for 35 years. The obituary states that James was a farmer from England and gardening was his occupation from the day he arrived in Davenport until the day her died. The obituary also states that she died at her home just north of the city limits on Harrison Street road.

The names of James and Eliza have been memorialized in a marble roster of the early pioneers of Scott County. The stone was originally at the “old” Scott County Courthouse in Davenport, Iowa. The stone is now at Scott County Park, just north of Davenport. Buffalo Bill Cody and his parents also have their name on that stone.

James and Eliza Houghton are buried in the Oakdale cemetery on the hill, facing Eastern Avenue. Also buried in that Houghton plot are Mary J. Houghton, Frank Nichols (child), Ruth Houghton (child) James W. Houghton, John Houghton , Rachel A. LaRue, Clara B. Houghton, Arthur E. Houghton and Dr. James R. Houghton.²
