STONEHAM, June 30 Bryan Ransom Houghton. 92. Civil War veteran. retired Boston steel importer. and well know for his many philanthropies in this town, died today at his home. 15 Green St. Mr Houghton was born in Winchester, the son of Bryan R. and Maria Britton Houghton. His family moved to Vermont and at the age of 17, when the Civil War broke out. He enlisted in the Vcrmont Sharpshooters. At the close of the war he wss a sergeant and drill instructor.
He was a member of Jantes Russell Lowell Post, G. A. R . of Boston, which surrcndered its charter some time ago because of depleted membership. After the war he was a
steel importer, partner in the firm of Houghton & Richards. 145 Oliver st., the largest importers of Austrian steel in the country. He retired 20 years ago but the firm is still in business. Intensely interested in this community, he made many worthwhile civic contributions. His gifts included a set of chimes of the Methodist Church, and a rifle range and gymnasium for the State Armory. He also assisted many local youths who could not afford a higher education.     
In 1892 he was married to Mary Hyde, Ossipee, N H. in the same house on Green st where he had resided for more than 50 years. Mrs. Houghton survives him.
Burial will be in Lindenwood Cemetery.
