NoteMichael Houghton: My father told me that the name was changed, but he was estranged from his father (his father left the family in Mansfield, MA when my dad was a boy and returned to Roxbury to live) so he was never very vocal about that side of the family. My initial search in the Dutch databases showed no Houghtons. As you probably know “Van” refers to “from” so I’ve been tracking cities that have names that could be a variation.
By the way, in the 1900 Census, Cornelius Jr. and both his sons are listed as piano sharp makers. My father had mentioned to me that they had owned a piano key factory so that appears to check out.
