Final Rites Held for
Retired Phone Co Foreman.

Herbert W Houghton of Pleasant Street Extension, Plymouth, retired telephone company foreman, died at the Lakes Region Hospital in Laconia Thursday morning, January 11. Final rites were held Saturday afternoon at the LaFontaine Funeral Home in Plymouth. The Reverend Philip M Polhemus, pastor of the Plymouth United Methodist Church, officiated, paying tribute to Herb, before the large congregation of relatives and friends. The many beautiful floral tributes bore testimony to the esteem in which he was held. Bearers were telephone employees of the company: Erwin Walker, Clarence Greenwood, of Plymouth, Everett Currier of Ashland, Roger Hawkins, Laconia, Roland Cayes, Lakeport and Roger Gage of Concord. Burial was in the Houghton family lot at Riverside Cemetery.

Herbert Houghton was born in Warren August 25, 1891, son of Edward L and Delia (Wolcott) Houghton. He attended Warren schools and later graduated from Concord Business School. During World War I he served in the Merchant Marines traveling to Europe and South America.

He first worked for the White Mountain Telephone Co, which later merged with the New England Tel & Tel Co. He served the company for 38 years and in later years was construction foreman, retiring in 1954. He was a member of the Telephone Pioneers of America. However, his retirement did not mean that he would not continue to enjoy life with his varied hobbies, which he carried on as long as good health permitted.

He loved children and served as Boy Scoutmaster in Plymouth for many years. He was also a member of Olive Branch Lodge #16, F & AM, and of the Bethlehem Chapter #12 O E S. Members of the Masonic Lodge conducted their rites at the funeral home Friday evening. He was a member of the Pemigewasset Valley Fish & Game Club from its start years ago. Herb was a great outdoorsman, enjoying fishing, hunting and mountain climbing. He often wondered if he and a young companion were the first to ski on Moosilauke Mountain back in 1917. He usually took a group of youngsters with him who enjoyed hiking with him. Among his hobbies in later years were his collection of 150 butterflies, a rock collection and rose garden. Young and old came to see his collections, even little tots. Mrs Blake's Nursery School, when taking nature walks, usually ended up at the Houghton residence nearby where Herb gladly showed them his collection. Children in the neighborhood liked to visit Uncle Herb and were always warmly received.

He married Grace Wilkins of Plymouth, a telephone operator, and they observed their Golden Wedding Anniversary in 1971, which was attended by many friends and relatives. It was a big day for Herb and his wife, who enjoyed every minute of it. He never let his ill health interfere with his love of life. He enjoyed getting out pictures which he had been taken since he was a boy. He always kept a diary.

"Herb" and Grace have one daughter, now Mrs Geraldine Patterson, of Rumney Depot. They have two granddaughters, Mrs Charlotte Mottram of West Hartford, Connecticut and Mrs Florence Daigle of Rumney Depot and two grandsons, Ray of Concord and Roger at NH Technical Institute; and four great-grandchildren, two boys and two girls. The two youngest were born in November and December of 1972, and Herb had his picture taken with the two youngest before a serious fall at his home made it necessary to enter the hospital for treatment. Other survivors include nieces, nephews and cousins.

Herb was a great Lover of birds and enjoyed feeding and watching them from his windows. Children always brought their ailing pets to him for special care. Herb held a Red Cross First Aid Instructor certificate and taught several classes. His was a busy life for a man retired 18 years ago. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

Five years ago Sharon Freeto, a next door neighbor, who was then on the staff of the Plymouth Record, wrote a fine article on Herb's life, which best tells what he meant to children. We quote: "As children, many of us who lived near Herbert Houghton on Pleasant Street, Plymouth, spent countless summer afternoons talking with our only savior from boredom. It was to him we bought our new pets or birds with broken wings. He gave us impromptu lessons on gardening and explained the scientific name of each interesting rock in his marvelous collection. He also gave us a respect and love for nature. His stories of adventure and mischief amused us endlessly, and as the summer waned he lamented us at our returning to school. Herb, though, knew more about school days than any of us had imagined. As a youngster, he walked some four miles to school in Warren every day. He graduated from 8th grade and went to high school for a few years until he became a student at Concord Business College." >The Plymouth Record, January 18, 1973.
