BiographyCliff Otto, 2020: " Betty and Roger lived at 46 Vanderburg Avenue in East Rutherford, New Jersey. Indeed, my mother and I lived with them for a while during WW II. They later moved to 89 Orchard Drive, Clifton, NJ, ca 1960. They had a summer home not far from where I lived in Hill. Roger was a serious photographer and I know that he photographed some celebrities. He also managed to become acquainted with people who were not on the "beaten track." Around the time of the movie, The Greatest Show on Earth, they took me to the circus, not exactly close to E. Rutherford, where we spent some time visiting with a couple of the Flying Wallendas and their baby in their trailer in the circus yard before the show started. I also recall visiting poet Donald Hall in New Hampshire with them when I was perhaps around 12 years old. Hall was the 14th U.S. Poet Laureate and there is a stanza in his poem, Letter After a Year, which is part of a memoriam to his wife:

Ruth Houghton had a stroke.
Her daughter sent me an album
of photographs Roger took
in his documentary passion ---
inside and outside our house,
every room, every corner ---
one day in September 1984.
I howled as I gazed at that day
intact. Our furniture
looked out of place, as if vandals
had shoved everything awry.
There were pictures on the walls
we put away long ago.
The kitchen wallpaper shone
bright red in Roger's Kodacolor;
it faded as we watched
not seeing it fade.

Roger worked for Bell/AT&T in New York City but there were occasions he was sent out in the field. I can recall their occasionally having to go to Houlton, Maine (which in my youth, I heard as Houghton but eventually learned was where a long-wave transmitting facility of AT&T was located). He was also an avid mineral collector. He along with the husband of Betty's sister Elsie, who also summered in Hill but lived in northern NJ, took me on many expeditions to old mines both in NH and NJ."
