The ancestors of Mr. Green were of Welsh descent, and emigrated from Radnorshire. Wales, in 1682, with Williarm Penn, on his fiist voyage to America; they settled in and near Philadelplia Pa. Among the grandchildren bom to these colonists from 1735 to 1745 was Samuel Miles, who volunteered in 1755 in
Capt. Isaac Wayi?"s company, at about sixteen years of age. He seiTed during the colonial troubles of Pennsylvania, receiving rapid promotion, until discharged from active service at Presqu? Isle (Erie), as captain, in 1761. At the battle of Long Island, where he commanded a regiment of riflemen, he was taken prisoner. He married Miss Catherine Wister, of Philadelphia. He served in various civil ofiices, as warden, commissioner, assemblyman, mayor of the city, and presidential elector. While engaged in the mercantile and ?on business. Captain Miles purchased exten-
sive tracts of mineral and timber land, and erected, besides his "Slitting-Mills" (iron) at Cheltenham, Centre Furnace Forge land roll-
ing-mill at Milesburg, Centre county; leaving an extensive and valuable estate in charge of his son, Joseph Miles, and his son-in-law, Jo-
seph B. McKcan, son of Gov. Thomas McKean.

Other grandchildren of the above-mentioned colonists were Joseph Green (1), who married Elizabeth, sister to Col. Samuel Miles;
also John Griffiths, who married Esther Wynn, both of the Society of Friends. Josejih Green (2), son of Joseph and Elizabeth,
married Hannah, daughter of John and Esther Griffiths, and became engaged, about 1790, at Milesburg Forges, living in Milesburg, where Joseph Green (3) was born, November 30, ?; he mamed Catherine, daughter of Joseph Miles, born at Centre Furnace, June 23, 1806, died in 1873. Jo-

public scliools, and then engaged in surveying and civil engineering in Minnesota during 1856 and l?. He took charge of the furnace projiprtios of Trvin Green & Co., at Mill Creek, Huntingdon countv, in 185S, and engaged in mercantile business in Huntingdon and Centre counties; and from 1863 to 1869, purchased the Mill Creek furnace property, en^iigiil ill the manufacture of iron, and has since r?cd there. Mr. Green was elect-
ed deputy survyir of Centre county, which was at the time strongly Democratic, by several hundred majority over his Democratic competitor. He has served several terms as auditor and school director of his district. During the war of the Rebellion, he was commissioned for three years as a captain in Company C, Twelfth Pennsylvania Militia, and was called into service during the invasion of Maryland by Lee's army.

Edward Augustus Green was married at Nashville, Tenn., to Eliza X., daughter of John Houghton, Esq., and Mary (Martin) Houghton, of Lewisburg, Pa. Edward A. and Eliza (Houghton) Green had two sons: Edward Houghton Green, M. D; and John Houghton, who died in 1888, aged nineteen.

Eliza Nevius Houghton, wife of Edward A. Green, and daughter of John Houghton, Esq., of Lewisburg, Pa., was born in Lewisburg,

her classmates, volunteered their services to the United States Sanitary Commission, to care for sick and wounded soldiers. They
were accepted and commissioned by the Government; were ordered to the Department of the Cumberland, to report for duty in the
United States hospitals at Nashville Tenn., where Miss Houghton remained, caring for sick and wounded soldiers (several months of
the time in a smallpox hospital) until the close of the war. Miss Houghton was also a successful and prominent teacher in the City Xor-

James C. Jackson (Farmer, Post-office, Woodlawn), History of Monroe County, 1884, pages 466 and 467

Ellis Jackson and wife, whose maiden name was Sarah Houden, were early settlers in Monroe county. Here the father became a responsible farmer and respected citizen, and he and his wife won the esteem and high regard of all who knew them. They reared a worthy family of children, and among these was James C., the subject of the present sketch. He was born December 7, 1850, and was brought up to farm work, having an opportunity, however, to obtain a good common school education, which he did not fail to improve. At the age of 20 he struck out in the world for himself, and, feeling a little lonely after leaving the old family hearthstone, he concluded to have a hearthstone of his own and somebody to sit by it, whose grace and beauty would be a feast for his eyes and heart. Accordingly, on the 6th of March, 1871, he was duly united in the bonds of matrimony with miss Anna R. Webb, a lady whose charms were more enrapturing than the beauty of all the stars, and whose lovely tresses swept in the summer zephyrs like the Milky Way that floats serenely in the sky. She was, indeed, a lady of rare beauty of form and feature, her loveliness of person only being exceeded by the beauty and gentleness of her mind and the excellence and tendernes of her heart. This union has proved one of great happiness, and Mrs. Jackson still presides over the home that she was brought to be queen of with that grace and refinement that are possible only to one of the most ladylike sensibilities.

Mr. and Mrs. Jackson have been singularly unfortunate in the loss of their children, having buried four of the nine with whom heaven blessed them, but the Lord giveth all we have, and in His good wisdom He taketh away. Let the will of the Lord be done. The five living are: Ernest, Reid, Minnie, Bobbie and Sunie. Those deceased were: Maggie, Eli, Lloyd and Cephas. Mr. Jackson has been farming, and still is following that occupation. He is an industrious man and, above all, a good husband, eminently worthy of the queenly wife who adorns his home with her lovely presence.2
