BiographyEdward (seemed to prefer as an adult, and I will use in this bio to help avoid confusion between him and his father) was the son of Thomas E. Houghton Sr. and Mary Ellen Byrd, who married on 6 Apr 1855 in Marshall Co., Indiana. It was a second marriage for Thomas Sr.. He had previously married Nancy M. Mitchell and they had had two sons together—Lorenzo M. (c.1852) and James E. (c.1853). Thomas and Mary would have four sons together—Charles E. (1857), Thomas Edward Jr. (19 Apr 1864), John C. (1868), and William L. (Nov 1869).

I found Edward's parents and half-brothers on the 1860 Census, living in Union, Marshall Co., Indiana, their surname spelled Holson instead of Houghton. Thomas, aged 38, was a farmer. Mary, aged 23, was keeping house. There with their father and step-mother were Lorenzo, aged 8, and James, aged 7. Also living with the family were 16-year-old Jefferson Houghton and 22-year-old Edward Drude.

Edward first appeared with his family on the 1870 Census, living near Argos in Union Township, Marshall County. Thomas Sr., aged 40, was busy with the farm. Mary, aged 31, was home with their combined six combined children—Thomas sons Lorenzo and James, aged 18 and 16, Thomas and Mary's sons Edward, John and William, aged 6, 2, and 7 months, and 9-year-old Mary Shaw, her relationship to the family unknown to me.

Sadly, five years after that census, the family lost wife and mother Mary on 8 Apr 1875, aged 38. With the welfare of his children in the mix, Thomas Sr. only waited about a year and a half before wedding third wife Julia Anne Myers in December of 1876. They would have six children together—Orlando (1878), Luther P. (May 1879), Bertha (Feb 1881), Dennis Ralph (1882), Effie L. (1886), and Chloe Viola (1889).

I caught back up with the family on the 1880 Census, still living in Union Township. Thomas Houghton Sr., aged 52, was still actively farming. Julia, aged 24, was keeping house. Still living at home with their father were Lorenzo, aged 28, Edward, aged 16, and William, aged 10. Lorenzo had married, and wife Mary, aged 21, and their daughter Minetta M., aged 3, were there with Lorenzo. Also there were Thomas Sr. and Julia's first two children, sons Orlando and Luther, aged 2 and 1.

With no 1890 Census still around, fast forward to the 1900 Census. The family was still living in Union Township. Thomas Sr., aged 71, was still farming. Julia, aged 44, reported that she had had six children, but that only five had survived to that census. The casuality was daughter Effie who died in 1894 at age 8. Still at home with their parents were Luther, aged 21, Bertha, aged 19, Dennis, aged 17, and Chloe, aged 11.

Edward was no longer living at home. On 6 Aug 1887, he had married first-wife Elizabeth Swigart in Marshall Co., Indiana. The couple had seven children together—May (1888-1894), Earl Lewis (12 Jul 1889), Fern H. (1892-1894), Herbert Russell (26 Feb 1894), Fred Harry (5 Jan 1896), Theodore (Aug 1897), and Everett C. (c.1903).

I found his family on the 1900 Census, living in Plymouth, Marshall Co., Indiana. Edward, aged 36, was working as an agricultural agent. Elizabeth, aged 27, reported that she had had six children, but that only four had survived to that census, a sad reminder of the loss of both daughter May at age 6, and daughter Fern at age 2 in 1894. There with their parents were Lewis (aka Earl), aged 10, Herbert, aged 6, Harry, aged 4, and Theodore, aged 2. Son Everett would join the family a couple years later.

Sadly, on 31 Aug 1909, the family lost wife and mother Elizabeth, claimed by peritonitis due to gall stones. Edward appeared without her on the 1910 Census, widowed, aged 45, living at 301 S. Walnut St. in Plymouth. Edward (T.E. on the record) was noted as a retail merchant of a music store. Still living with their father were Herbert, aged 16, Harry, aged 14, and Everett, aged 7. Back living with his father and siblings was son Earl, aged 20. Earl had married Emma Lee on 27 Aug 1908 in Marshall Co., and they welcomed son Henry circa 1909. The couple was not living together, but both noted their marital status as married. Emma, aged 20, was living on E. Sophia St. in Plymouth with her father John Lee, aged 48, and brothers Homer and Glen, aged 16 and 14. With Emma was one-year-old son Harry. Earl and Emma had a second child together, daughter Helen, born circa 1911. Sadly, a couple of years after Helen's birth, Emma died on 31 Dec 1913 of tuberculosis.

Just before the next census, Edward's step-mother Julia died on 5 Sep 1909, widowing Edward's father Thomas Sr. for the third time.

Living with the Houghton family in 1910 was 34-year-old Lillian Davis, noted as the family's housekeeper. About four years after that census, Edward married her. They welcomed Thomas Edward III on 22 Mar 1914. About that same time, Edward appears to have acquired a restaurant.

On 4 Aug 1917, Edward's son Herbert married Fern Margaret Spitler in Marshall County. A year later, son Everett married Ilo G. Seymour on 23 Nov 1918 in St. Joseph, Berrien Co., Michigan.

When the 1920 Census was enumerated, the family was living at 501 or 601 Lake Ave. in Plymouth. Edward, aged 55, was noted as the proprietor of a restaurant. Lillian, aged 46, was keeping house. There with his parents was son Thomas III, aged 5.

A year after that census, Edward's son Earl married second wife Veroca Shaw on 11 Sun 1921 in Marshall County.

The 1930 Census placed the family at their Lake Ave. address in Plymouth. Edward, aged 66, was noted as the proprietor of a hotel. Lillian, aged 56, was keeping house. Still at home with their parents was Thomas III, aged 16.

By the 1940 Census, the family had moved to a residence located on West Garro St. in Plymouth. Edward, aged 76, appears to have retired. Lillian, aged 66, was keeping house. Son Thomas, aged 26, was working as a waiter in a restaurant. Back living with the family was Edward's son Everett, divorced, aged 37 and working as a chef in a restaurant. Lodging with the family was 60-year-old Harry Van Zalder.

Nine years after that census, Edward went into the light on 18 Oct 1949, aged 85. Lillian lived on, not departing this earth until 7 Nov 1968, aged 95. She was laid to rest next to Edward. After almost twenty years, they would have had a lot to catch up on.
