BiographyYates: William and Elizabeth ran the Star Ranch where my father, Thomas A. Yates, worked. William was a real joker, my dad tells me. One time William let my dad take his Buick sedan but it was out of gas. Will caught his horse and rode to his combine harvester to get the gas. He then had dad and his son Furrels suck on a hose to get the gas out of the can and into the Buick. Furrels mouth got so sore that he couldn't suck anymore. William said "I believe if you try one more time you will get it out." He did and got the job done. Will had been putting the hose flush on the bottom, so the gas wouldn't flow, to play a trick on the boys. One time dad and Furrels slept out and Will told them that they had to get up at 6:00 AM and he was only going to tell them once. The next morning Will got two dippers full of cold spring water and then said to the boys in a low
whisper that it was time to get up. Of course they didn't stir as they didn't hear a word. Down came the cold water on their faces and they shot out of bed. He was a real character. Working with Furrels and LaVar dad became quite close to them when they were all boys. They became his favorite cousins of all his relatives. He especially enjoyed being with Ferrels who was close to his age. One time when the Houghton's went away, Furrels, dad and dad's brother Bill went down to the Houghton's chicken coup. They blew into sacks then tied them with string. These were called poppers. Then they tied them to the roosters tails. When the roosters ran back to the hens, the hens got scared and would run away from the roosters. One day LaVar got a team of horses and rigged up a screen which he tied to the horses with rope. He drug the screen behind them all over the ranch. He then called my dad and told him to get on the screen and he would give him a ride. Dad got on and LaVar pulled him over a bunch of cow puckies with pieces flying through the screen in dads face. LaVar was laughing all the time as this was his plan from the very first moment that he had seen the screen. These kind of
tricks were going on all the time at the ranch. One day Furrels, dad and another boy went down to the reservoir in Mona to get horses to ride. It was the spring of the year and they picked out a horse for dad to ride. The horse was named Margie and dad had a loop over her nose. Dad said he would ride her back if they wouldn't run the horses because Margie was a horse that didn't like other horses ahead of her. All went well until they got to the main road to the ranch. The guys then started the horses running. Dad
couldn't stop Margie. She run towards the corral which had poles for a gate and then she jumped. You guessed it. Dad with no saddle, shot off right into the cow puckies. My dad has many memories of growing up working on Star Ranch.9
