BiographyHarry Winfield Houghton, was born in Ohio, on 10/09/1855. His parents were William and Harriet (Packard) Houghton, formerly of New York State.
It is thought that the family came to Michigan prior to his father enlisting in the Civil War. Harry's childhood is not well known, but he did have half siblings. Although his father and siblings moved to Leelanau County in the 1880's, Harry remained in Cone, Washtenaw County, Michigan with his wife and daughter. Harry married Sarah Augustia Miller on 03/28/1876 in Dundee, Monroe County, Michigan. Together they farmed and raised their only child, Elizabeth.

Harry Winfield Houghton, was born in Ohio, on Oct 9,1855. His parents were William and Harriet (Packard) Houghton, formerly of New York State, then Huron Co, Ohio. It is thought that the family came to Michigan prior to his father enlisting in the, 23rd Michigan Infantry during the Civil War. Harry's childhood is not well known, but after his mother died on Oct 16,1877 his father married Ella Totten. His father then moved to Leelanau County in the 1880's, but Harry remained in Cone, Washtenaw County, Michigan with his wife and daughter. Harry married Sarah Augustia Miller on March 28,1876 in Dundee, Monroe County, Michigan. Together they farmed and raised their only child, Elizabeth, born April 4,1877. He remained in contact with his family in Leelanau, through letters, a few remain today held by his Great-Great Grandaughter, Sue Seeterlin Rice.4

Grandma Houghton
Is was in the fall of the year when Grandma last visited us. She would have been eighty-eight, had she lived until December 9th. When she passed on last September, the family lost a member which could not begin to be equaled in rigidity of purpose. As she slowly climbed the porch steps that fall day, I could not help but admire her spirit of independence. She asked no assistance and said she would rather "go it alone". I can see her now, sitting on a straight backed chair, which was usually her choice, visiting with her family. She was short of stature, her shoulders slightly stooped and her body slumped forward. A large head set firmly on those shoulders was thinly covered with wispy gray hair. Dim blue eyes had watched as much as three generations come and go and had read the Bible time and again with only the aid of ten cent store glasses to the one seeing eye.

She thought for a minute, during her last visit and said, My, Helen, I miss church so. Harry and I never missed a Sunday if we could help it. We walked many a Sunday all the way to Four Towns.
Although her criticism was often provocative, she held the admiration of all who knew her. This old pioneer, who was born and raised when Michigan was practically frontier, followed the same narrow path which she mapped for herself in her early days to the end.8

BiographyElizabeth Houghton was born in Lodi, Michigan on 04/04/1877, to Harry Winfield and Sarah Augustia (Miller) Houghton. She was an only child and was very devoted to her parents. Lizzie married William Clyde Sanford on 12/21/1898, and raised 2 children, Wyman Winfield and Evadna Marion (Richardson). She and William maintained a farm, while caring for her aging parents and her children.
Upon retirement from farm life, they moved to Waterford, Michigan to be closer to their family.1
