BRIDGEWATER - Ruth Houghton Needham, 84, died Nov. 27, 2011, at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, N.H.

She was born in Bridgewater Corners Feb. 15, 1927, the daughter of Karl and Jean Houghton.

In 1949, she married Stillman Needham. Mr. Needham died in 1996.

Mrs. Needham worked for many years at the Bridgewater woolen mill. After she closed her beauty shop in 1985, she was employed at the Woodstock Inn gift shop.

She was active in Bridgewater Congregational Church and a member of Bridgewater Historical Society and the King's Daughters. She was awarded the 2005 Governors Award for Outstanding Volunteer Community Service while helping moms with their new babies at Good Beginnings.

She enjoyed knitting, bird watching and was theater enthusiast. She also wrote an autobiography, "From the Upper Road."

Survivors include three daughters, Brenda Needham, Belinda Shropshire, both of Quechee, and Beryl Needham of Ann Arbor, Mich; five granddaughters and a grandson; and her twin brother, Royal Houghton of Ascutney.

Mrs. Needham was also predeceased by an infant daughter in 1959.

The memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, Dec. 2, at Bridgewater Congregational Church.
