Deceased Name: ROBERT BRUCE HOUGHTON
Robert Bruce Houghton, 78, a longtime summer resident of Spruce Head here, died July 23 at Penobscot Bay Medical Center, Rockland after a long illness with lymphoma.

He was born in Clinton, Mass., a son of Navy Airshipman Lt. Arthur Reginald Houghton and Helen Brown. He spent his early childhood at the Naval (Dirigible) Air Station, Lakehurst, N.J.

After his father's death aboard the USS Shenandoah, Mr. Houghton was brought up in Washington, D.C., by his uncle and aunt, Robert and Margaret Kilroy Teachout. He graduated from Western High School and attended Georgetown University.

In February 1942 he enlisted in the Army and was assigned to the Corps of Engineers. He received basic training at Fort Belvoir, Va., and was commissioned a second lieutenant in August 1942. He was assigned to Oran, Algeria, and later to the China-India-Burma Theater, serving in New Delhi, India, from 1944 to 1945. He was transferred to Calcutta, India, until February 1946 and served in various Army reserve units.

In 1951 he was recalled to active duty. He attended engineer heavy equipment maintenance school and was reassigned as a heavy equipment maintenance officer in Fort Leonard Wood, Mo. In 1952 he was transferred to Camp Gifu, Japan. He was assigned to Yong-Dong-Po, Korea, in November 1952 and was promoted to captain in 1953. In the Army Reserves he assumed the duties of company commander. In 1962 he was promoted to major and assigned to the Ohio National Guard until his retirement in 1966.

After serving in the Army he worked for Ohio Machinery Co., a Caterpillar Tractor distributor, and eventually became sales promotion manager. He was president and a board member of the Ohio Contractors Association.

He lived in Chagrin Falls, Ohio, for 26 years, where he was a vestryman of St. Martin's Episcopal Church.

He also organized and coordinated the activities of the Hickory Hill Home Owners Association and was a member of the Cleveland Masonic Al Koran.

During the winter months of his retirement years, he was a member of the Scottsdale Shrine Club and El Zaribah in Scottsdale, Ariz. He also volunteered for 10 years at Scottsdale Memorial North/Shea Hospital and was an officer and board member of the Sweetwater Ranch Manor I Owners Association.

He began spending summers at Spruce Head 40 years ago and was a volunteer driver for Coastal Transportation, Rockland.

Surviving are his wife of 43 years, Maren B. Houghton of Spruce Head; four sons, Kevin B. of Washington, D.C., Bryan B. Houghton of Denver, G. Wick Elderkin of Portsmouth, N.H., Denny E. Elderkin of Scottsdale and Robert B. Houghton Jr. of Hawaii; one brother, George of Carlsbad, Calif; and two grandchildren.
