SPOFFORD, N.H. -- Carl G. "Monk" Houghton, 85, of Spofford died Friday (6-17-11) after a lengthy illness.

He was born in Walpole, N.H., on Dec. 26, 1925. He was the son of Carl L. and Melena (Podwin) Houghton. Carl grew up in Greenfield, Mass., and was a graduate of Greenfield High School.

He was a WWII U.S. Army Air Force veteran in the Asiatic Pacific Theatre, serving in New Guinea and the South Pacific.

Carl received an Associate's Degree from Boise State College in Boise, Idaho, in 1950. He was a member of the ski jumping team and jumped competitively at the college level.

As a ski jumper, Carl was a proud member of the Edelweiss Ski Club in Greenfield. Carl competed on ski jumping hills around New England and New York State. His favorite jumps were in Bingville (East Greenfield) and Harris Hill in Brattleboro, Vt. Carl also had a passion for downhill skiing that he passed on to family and friends alike. Carl also enjoyed golf and was the Simsbury (Conn.) Senior Champion in 1981 and 1982.

He was in sales for the Markem Corp. in Keene, N.H., for 15 years and American Laundry Machinery of Cincinnati, Ohio, for 25 years. During these years, Carl lived in New Hampshire, Ohio, Michigan, New York State, Pennsylvania and Connecticut before returning to the area.

Carl married Patricia Malloy in 1957 in Holy Trinity Church in Greenfield.

Besides leaving his wife of 54 years, Carl also leaves a son, Craig and his wife Beth of Mt. Alto, Pa; a daughter, Connie Van de Graaf and her husband Peter of North Andover; a son, Dan of Boston, Mass., and a son, David of Northampton, Mass. Carl also leaves five grandchildren and three sisters, Anna Farrell, Lorraine O'Neil and Cecile Houghton, all of Greenfield.

Services will be private and burial will be in South Cemetery in Leyden, Mass. A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Born in Greenfield, MA on Jan. 14, 1927, she was the daughter of Carl L. and Melina E. (Podwin) Houghton. During her early childhood, her family lived in Bethel, VT where her father was employed rebuilding bridges after the Flood of 1927 and later working for the State of Vermont to combat a Gypsy Moth outbreak. The family returned to Greenfield where Anna went to the North Parish Elementary School and later graduated from Greenfield High School. After graduation, she worked as a salesperson at Wilson's Department store in Greenfield and later as a telephone operator at the Greenfield Telephone Company. She married William (Bill) H. Farrell on October 2, 1948 and soon thereafter she and her husband founded Farrell's Auto School, providing driver's training for thousands of Franklin County residents for several decades. In 1961 she became a member of Blessed Sacrament Church.
She was a devoted wife, mother of four children, was actively involved in many community activities and was a passionate Red Sox follower. Her hobbies included gardening and needlepoint. She was predeceased by her husband William H. Farrell in 1999, her daughter Jennifer Louise Maher in 2007 and her brother Carl. L. Houghton of Spofford, NH in 2011. She leaves a son, William L. Farrell and his wife Shelly of Charlemont, MA; a daughter, Beverly Sanders and her husband Chris of Carmel, CA; a son Brian T. Farrell and his wife Gina of Feeding Hills, MA; two sisters, Lorraine O'Neil of Greenfield and Cecile Houghton of Pleasant Hills, IA. Anna also leaves seven grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
Calling hours will be held from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m. with a reading at 2:30 p.m. on December 31, 2016 at the Kostanski Funeral Home, 220 Federal St. in Greenfield.

John Graham Houghton

Services for John Graham Houghton, 60, of Santa Clarita, Calif., will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, May 15, at Faith Community Church. A reception will follow. He died on May 10, 2004, in Santa Clarita.

John was born on Sept. 22, 1943, in Berkeley, Calif. He was involved in the Faith Community Church, enjoyed reading and spending time with his granddaughters.

Survivors include his wife of 40 years, Sandy Houghton, of Santa Clarita; daughter and son-in-law, Mary and Jason Hartung; granddaughters, Megan and Cara Hartung; beloved uncle and aunt Norman and Frances Arrowsmith, and sister, Laurie Babicki and family.

John was a very loving husband, father, and grandfather and very much enjoyed his family and friends. We are so thankful to know he is at home with the Lord.

GREAT VALLEY — Josephine E. Houghton, 80, of Route 219, died Thursday (May 13, 2004) at the Olean General Hospital.
She was born Oct. 30, 1923 in Great Valley, the daughter of the late Harvey A. and Lydia R. (Miller) Griffin.
Mrs. Houghton was married to Irving L. Houghton, who predeceased her on Dec. 18, 1986.
She and her husband owned and operated a dairy farm on Sugartown Road for many years.
Later she worked at the Burrell Cutlery in Ellicottville for 19 years.
Mrs. Houghton loved to crochet, cook and collect bells.
She is survived by three sons, Charles (Donna) Houghton of California, Md., Wayne and Bruce Houghton, both of Great Valley.
Also surviving is a daughter, Wilma Chapman of Great Valley; three grandchildren, Chief Petty Officer Dale Chapman US Navy, Capt. Douglas Chapman US Army and Amy Chester and three great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Besides her husband, she was predeceased by three brothers, Elton, Richard and Robert Griffin and three sisters, Lorraine Foster, Beatrice Currier and Marion Briggs.
Friends may call from 5 to 9 p.m. Saturday at the O’Rourke Funeral Home, 411 Rock City St. in Little Valley.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Sunday at the funeral home with the Rev. Thomas Hamilton, officiating.
Burial will be in Allegany Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to the Ellicottville-Great Valley Ambulance Service or the Alzheimer’s Association.
