Walter Houghton

ORLAND AND BANGOR - Walter L. Houghton, 91, died in Bangor, August 29, 2014. Born in Hingham, MA on April 20, 1923, Walter was educated in the Hingham school system.

He worked many years for his grandfather, Charles Houghton in the family business, the Hingham Boat Livery. He worked for over 33 years for the US Government at the US Naval Ammunition Depot, Hingham MA and for the US Post Office and Postal Service, Hingham, MA. Walter served in the US Army, 759th Military Police Battalion, Berlin, Germany. He was active in all sports, teaching roller-skating for Sholes Rollerdome in Dorchester and Hull, MA and also playing football and baseball in the Quincy, MA park leagues. Walter was an avid candlepin bowler and golf player.

Walter is survived by his daughter, Kathleen Houghton of Orlando, FL, his son, Robert Houghton of Orlando, FL, his son, David Houghton, his daughter in law, Elizabeth Houghton and his granddaughter, Samantha Houghton, all of Hampden. He was predeceased in 2012 by his beloved wife of 35 years, Ardith Clair Houghton.

A graveside service for the family was held on September 4, 2014 at Oak Grove Cemetery in Orland, with Reverend Peter Remick officiating. Arrangements were made by Mitchell-Tweedie Funeral Home in Bucksport. In lieu of flowers, gifts may be made in Walter's memory to a charity of one's choice. Wallace R. Houghton, Jr., 83, of Lincoln Apartments, passed away Saturday, May 15, 2010. He was born in Worcester, son of the late Jean (Sargent) and Wallace R. Houghton, Sr. He attended Worcester Academy and served with U.S. Army in post WWII occupied Italy. He was a machinist at Norton Co. Wallace was a member of Belmont Street Baptist Church. He enjoyed flying model airplanes and daily walks in downtown Worcester. Wallace is survived by his brother, John Sargent Houghton of CA and niece, Stephanie Houghton. He also leaves many friends at Lincoln Apartments.

Graveside services will be held at Rural Cemetery, 180 Grove Street, Friday, May 21st at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Veterans of Foreign Wars Foundation at "vfwfoundation.org" Nordgren Memorial Chapel, 300 Lincoln Street is directing arrangements.
