Walter L. Houghton, 70, of 5607 Trinity Ave., formerly of Copenhagen Road, died this morning at Albany Medical Center, Albany. He was stricken six days ago.

The funeral will be at the convenience of the family at the Bezanilla-McGraw Funeral Home, Carthage. Burial will be in Swinburne Cemetery, Deer River.

There will be no calling hours.

Surviving are his wife, Rosemary E., Carthage; two sons, Steven, Copenhagen, and David, Naumburg; two daughters, Maryanne McLane, Utica, and Mrs. Jerry (Linda) Snyder, Ellisburg; 14 grandchildren; a brother, Donald, Brantingham Lake; three sisters, Mrs. Dorothy Burke, Watertown, Mrs. Ruth Rockwood, Garden Grove, Calif., and Mrs. Clarence (Marjorie) Benware, Black River; 14 grandchildren; several nieces and nephews, and a long-time companion, Norma Allen, Lowville.

Five brothers, Floyd, Stanley, Earl, Leo, and Lansing, all died before him.

Born Feb. 11, 1925, in Carthage, a son of Oscar and Pearl Roeder Houghton, he attended West Carthage High School.

He served during World War II in the Army in the 307th Airborne Medical Company from April 6, 1943 to Jan. 17, 1946, serving mainly in Europe.

He married Rosemary E. Hofer on June 7, 1947, at St. James Church, Carthage, with the Rev. Samuel DeAngelo officiating. The couple had been separated for many years.

Mr. Houghton joined the former Crown-Zellerbach Paper Co. (now James River Corp.) in 1946. He was a machine tender for 44 years, retiring on March 1, 1990.

He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7227, Carthage.

ObituaryBlack River- Marjorie E. Benware, 81, died Monday morning at home peacefully in her sleep. She was born on November 18, 1928 in West Carthage to Oscar Roland and Ella Pearl Roeder Houghton. She attended West Carthage High School. She worked at Crown Zellerbach, Fort Drum and she was a histologist at Mercy Hospital for ten years, she retired from Mercy Hospital. During her retirement she worked at Mercy Hospital as a secretary and at the Post Office.

She married Clarence G. Benware on December 13, 1946 in the Rectory of the Black River Church; her attendants were Walter Houghton and Rosemary Hofer.

She is survived by four daughters; Susan Benware, Black River; Penny and her husband Arthur Keen, Black River; Sandra and her husband Roger Marland, Plattsburgh; and Brenda and her husband Curtis Yeary. She is also survived by 7 grandchildren; Michelle and Krister Dunn; Chris and Tami Marland; Joel and Janet Keen; Joshua and Amy O'Kay; Andrew and Alayna Marland; Scott and Elizabeth Keen; Jodi and Jared Barber; and 13 great- grandchildren.

She is predeceased by several siblings; Floyd, Lansing, Stanley, Dorothy Burke, Ruth Rockwood, Earl, Leo, Walter, and Donald Houghton and one great grand-daughter, Mya Keen, predeceased her in 2007.

William P. Houghton, 85, Liverpool Road, Liverpool, formerly of Wellesley Island, died Friday at St. Joseph's Hospital in Syracuse after a short illness.

Mr. Houghton owned and operated a refrigeration and air conditioning business in the Brewerton area from 1947 to 1975. He then moved to Wellesley Island and owned and operated Bill's Mini Mart and Liquor Store at the entrance to Wellesley Island State Park, until retiring in 1985. He returned to the Cicero/Liverpool area in 2005.

Born Oct. 3, 1923, on Wellesley Island, son of Dr. Paul and Hazel Porter Houghton, he attended schools on Wellesley Island and graduated from Clayton High School.

Mr. Houghton entered the Army in January 1943 and was honorably discharged at the rank of Tech-5 in October 1945. He participated in the Normandy invasion, served in Northern France, the Rhineland and Central Europe. He was seriously wounded and received the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star Medal. He also received the European-African-Middle Eastern Service Medal, with bronze arrowhead.

He married Thelma I. Patterson on Dec. 13, 1941, in Plessis.

Mr. Houghton was a 32nd degree Mason, where he served as past master in Brewerton. He was a member of Brewerton Methodist Church, Brewerton Fire Department, Brewerton Sportsman Club, Order of the Eastern Star, the Scottish Rights, the Knights of Birmingham and the Syracuse Disabled American Veterans.

He also was a member of Wellesley Island Fire Department, Fineview Methodist Church, and LaFargeville American Legion Klock Smith Post 1588. He enjoyed fishing and was an avid duck hunter.

Surviving besides his wife are four daughters and three sons-in-law, Karen Houghton, Eel Bay, Judy and Michael Barth, Liverpool, Cheryl and Paul Carlucci, and Sandy and Ron Oaster, all of Cicero; a sister, Jean Lindsey, Wellesley Island and Cicero; 12 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Fineview Methodist Church with the Rev. Frederica Webb, pastor, officiating. Burial with military honors will be in Riverside Cemetery.

Calling hours will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday at T.R. Jetty Funeral Home, Clayton.
