The international headquarters of the world's largest manufacturer of caramel coloring is located in a building as unassuming as the family behind the business.

Tucked into the outskirts of a quaint Louisville, Ky., neighborhood known for its great antiques stores, the home for D.D. Williamson's operations can easily be missed at first. It takes a closer look to zero in on the two-story brick building.

D.D.Williamson is owned and operated by the Nixon family. Gouverneur H. (Bo) Nixon '50, the patriarch of the family, retired from the business in 1992. Son Theodore H. (Ted) Nixon '74 is president and chief executive officer. Daughter Edith H. (Edie) Nixon '79 is chief information officer. Ted and Edie's siblings, Anne, Sally, and Sandy are also involved to varying degrees in the family business.

"There have been some satisfying things in my life," Mr. Nixon said. "My wife and I have been very fortunate in raising children who work together every day and at the end of the day are still friends. The other thing that is satisfying is to have completely passed on the business to the next generation. People ask how my transition was. When I walked out the door, I really walked out the door. I didn't want an office here or a presence here. I had confidence in them, and I became involved with volunteer work. It was a complete transition, and it was very satisfying because everyone gets along."

D.D.Williamson is the world's largest supplier of caramel color. The company holds about 70 percent of the world market share for caramel color used by the soft drink industry.

"Each and every day 1.2 billion servings of food products are sold with our food coloring, whether it's a softdrink that's sold in China or soy sauce in Beijing," Ted said. "We have 150 people around the world who are manufacturing product that is sold and consumed 1.2 billion times per day."

In addition to the Louis-ville location, D.D.Williamson has manufacturing facilities in Modesto, Calif; Cork, Ireland; Gurabo, Puerto Rico; Shanghai, China; and Swaziland, Africa. A plant is planned for Brazil.

D.D.Williamson, founded in 1865 in New York as a flavoring company, began moving operations to Louisville in 1948. Bo Nixon joined the business after earning his degree in basic engineering in 1950. His father had joined D.D.Williamson when he was only 16. Bo Nixon's father and a partner bought the company in the early 1930s. The both died in the 1940s and some 30 years later, the company bought the partner's widow's interest and D.D.Williamson became wholly owned by the Nixon family.

The company began to go global during Mr. Nixon's tenure. He said the family has always considered the world as their market.

"I think that for a company our size, we were ahead of the times," Edie said. Ted agreed.

"It's very easy to look back and say that in 1978 going into Ireland was easy," he said. "But when we went into Ireland, at least four competitors had been approached and all had declined.

"We don't even perceive barriers. There were lots of things that we had to overcome and deal with, but that's life. I think that's been exciting."

Ted said the engineering education they obtained at Princeton is a big factor in how they do business. Edie concurred. The tenacity and the problem-solving skills needed to make it through Princeton are crucial to success in business.

"Your ability to analyze and overcome adversities is probably the most important tool you will ever use," Ted said. "There are plenty of times when the dice don't roll your way, when somebody throws something in your way. When the dice rolls the right way, that's easy. But the reason you get that roll is because you hung in long enough. The dice will not always roll your way, so you better be able to understand how to tough it up, overcome the odds, and restack them in your favor so that you have options."

The Nixons credit a lot of their success to their "family" approach to business. Employees are called associates. When hired, they are welcomed into the Williamson family. A scholarship fund ensures that every associate's child who wants to go to college can. And the company, against the advise of financial consultants, still provides a defined benefits retirement plan.

"We view ourselves as a family," Edie said. "The entire company is the Williamson family. We have only about 150 associates worldwide, so we know the names of all the wives and the children. It's neat. Retired employees call in occasionally to see how everyone is doing."

Ted added that one of the company's greatest strengths is that "we are all a team." He said building an organization like D.D.Williamson would be an impossible undertaking for just three people, who all live in the same city. Associates are key to the success of the company. Many associates join D.D.Williamson for life.

"One of our associates started with us when we were in Long Island City, and he's now been with us for 52 years," Edie said. "It's not unusual for employees to be with us 30 to 35 years."

Ted added that it's just fun working with people who get along. "It's been rewarding," he said.

The business's creed of trust and integrity began in the Nixon home.

"I think that one of the real consistent values that we have had--and that is the real focus for us at Williamson--is our trust and integrity. If we don't do anything else, we are going to do it right and do it so that we can live with ourselves at the end of the day. That's what defines us today, tomorrow, and hopefully 20 or 30 years from now."

The elder Mr. Nixon was a classmate of David Billington '50, Gordon Y.S. Wu Professor of Engineering in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering.

Professor Billington was academic adviser to Edie.

"The Nixons are the kind of people who hold things together without ever calling attention to themselves," Professor Billington said of his long-time friend and classmate. "They are pillars of the community, but never like to be in the forefront."

Edie agreed that she prefers to do her good deeds without calling attention to herself.

"I can get a lot more done incognito, and that's more fun," she said. "You can do a lot more if people don't know who you are or what you are associated with. I get a lot of joy from giving back to the community. I think we were blessed with a great family and a great life, and some people aren't so blessed. I am going to do whatever I can for the community, whether it's here in Louisville or in Ireland."

Ted added that there are really no limits to what you can do when you don't care who gets the credit. He said that 5 percent of the company's bottom line is funneled back into the community.

"We are fairly active in the community, and yet we have no need for our name to be associated with events," Ted said. "I have always found that the more you give, the more you receive."

In fact, keeping the D.D.Williamson name is one way of insulat ing the family against direct recognition.

"D.D.Williamson is a name that is known in the industry," Ted said. "We have a good name, why mess with it? It does say something about how we are as a family and how we approach business."

Mr. Nixon advises people starting in business today to set their priorities from the beginning.

"One of the big differences in business today than when I started is that with cell phones, beepers, and email, you are never away from business," he said. "You have to set your priorities. Make time for family and say this is family time. Otherwise, you could work 24 hours a day. I think it's important to say, don't make business your whole life."

Edie advises to choose a satisfying career over big bucks. Ted added that a solid grounding with good values is essential.

"You need to keep your values up," he said. "Sometimes that means moving on to a different job because you may be asked to do something you are uncomfortable with. A lot of people have been caught up in the end justifies the means game, but it's a very slippery slope."
