Jen Houghton-Pratt: "I know so little about the alleged Native American blood. I wasn't even told about it until I was pregnant with my first child. (This was after Frank's death) My grandmother showed me a picture of a very obviously Native American woman said it was my great grandma Houghton and told me if the baby "didn't look right" that she was the reason and that she was an Indian.That was as much as she would tell me, other than the woman's name was Mary (Mary Lightfoot or something that looked like Lightfoot was written on the picture) and that she wasn't from "up here". (In Grandma's mind,"UP HERE" meant anywhere north of the Mason-Dixon line.) She said Frank didn't want her to talk about it. It doesn't surprise me that my elder cousins hadn't been told, since their children were born before Frank's death. Frank was not such a nice guy. He was a very abusive husband & father."

Louis E. Houghton, age 73, of Mears, passed away Saturday, March 27 at Memorial Medical Center.

He was born Jan. 13, 1926, in Shelby, the son of Francis “Frank” and Lottie (Swinton) Houghton. He was a life resident of Oceana County. Mr. Houghton had been employed at Whitehall Leather Company, Howmet, Gerber Products and Norge before his retirement. He has also been a bus driver for Ferry Schools. He currently did maintenance for the Golden Inn Restaurant in Mears.

He is survived by his daughters, Marsha (Jim) Jansen of Fountain and Brenda Johnson (Darrell Crothers) of Hart; special companion of many years, Carol Alderson of Mears; grandchildren, Richard Johnson Jr., Catherine (Joe) Abbatoy, Heather Johnson and Arthur Masco (and fiance Kelly Wood); several great-grandchildren; brothers, Leroy (Annabelle) Houghton of Hesperia, Dale Houghton of Shelby and Delbert Houghton of Hart; and his ex-wife, Dorothy Houghton of Shelby.

He was preceded in death by his sister, June Deeds, and grandson, Jarrod Johnson.

A memorial service for Mr. Houghton will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 31 at the Cooper-Harris Funeral Home of Shelby with the Rev. Earnest Cummings officiating. Interment will be in Ferry Township Cemetery.

Memorials directed to the Lakeshore Community Hospital CT Scan Fund will be appreciated.

Dale A. Houghton, age 81, passed away Tues., May 20, 2008. He was born Feb. 28, 1927 in Shelby to Frank and Lottie (Swinton) Houghton. He was retired from Gerber Products. He is survived by his sister, Mary (Dale) Clark of Hesperia; many nieces and nephews and great-nieces and nephews. Dale was preceded in death by his sister, June Deeds and brothers, Louis, Delbert and Leroy Houghton.
