Community activist

Eloise Katherine Kautz Houghton of Newton died Tuesday, Jan. 15, 2008. She was 87.

A daughter of the late Edwin Kautz, a Baptist minister, and Anne Kautz, immigrants from Hungary and Czechoslovakia, respectively, she was a resident of Newton for more than 58 years. Mrs. Houghton was a summer resident for more than 45 years of Breakwater Road and Brewster’s Sea Pines Village.

A community leader in Newton, she was a lifelong activist for social equality, human rights, peace and nonviolence.

She was respected, particularly in the city of Newton and at the Friends Meeting House in Cambridge (Quakers), where she was a longtime member.

Mrs. Houghton inherited a passion for improving the human condition. As a child, her family moved throughout Texas and the northeast United States as her parents cared for the needs of their immigrant community through various Baptist ministries. She spoke at many Newton political, religious and civic organizations advocating to make her community and the world a better place.

She enjoyed nature and the outdoors, and spent hours on the Brewster sand flats exploring the environment with her children and digging for clams, and later contributing to the founding of the Cape Cod Museum of Natural History.

Determined to oppose bigotry and war, she generated the enthusiasm of others to become involved in serving their communities, from Newton churches to City Hall to the Boy Scouts to the neighborhood dry cleaner and grocer.

Among her many awards, Mrs. Houghton received the Key to the city of Newton, the Centennial Medallion, and was one of the first to receive an award from the Newton Human Rights Commission. During the 1960s and 1970s, she directed the Committee on Responsibility, bringing war-injured Vietnamese children to the United States for treatment of burns. As a founding board member of the Newton Community Development Foundation, she was recognized by the Massachusetts Senate and House with the Excellence in Community Development Award for the development of low- and moderate-income housing. NCDF, in turn, established the Eloise K. Houghton annual award for volunteerism in her name. She also served as the president of the Newton League of Women Voters and Church Women United.

She leaves her husband of 63 years, Proctor W. Houghton; her children, Laurel Ann of California, Glen of Maine, and Bruce and Mark of Massachusetts; a sister, Elaine Toscano of East Windsor, N.J; and five grandchildren.

Her memorial service at the Friends Meeting House in Cambridge will be announced at a later date.

Memorial donations may be made to the American Friends Service Committee, 2161 Massachusetts Ave., Cambridge, MA 02140.

Arrangements were made by Eaton & Mackay Funeral Home, Newton.

ObituaryMar 26, 2008Kerrville, TX, USA, Kerrville Daily Times (TX) - March 26, 2008
Deceased Name: Dr. Shannon Neville Houghton
Dr. Shannon Neville Houghton, 35, departed this life on March 20, 2008, in Pittsburgh, Pa.

She was born June 4, 1972, at Andrews Air Force Base Hospital in the Washington, D.C. area, the daughter of Celia Huff Neville and Richard McArthur Neville. The family moved to Statesboro, Ga., in 1975, when Shannon was three years old. She was the middle of three children, a brother, Sean, 11 months older, and a sister, Heather, 15 months younger. They developed a strong bond of love that never wavered. They would invent their own games to play, and even as adults, they delighted in reminiscing about these childhood games. At family reunions in subsequent years, it was gratifying to see how much they continued to love one another and how much they enjoyed being together. It also was gratifying to see how much Shannon loved her nieces and nephew and how much they, in turn, loved her and one another.

Shannon's mother and stepfather, Dr. Mat Pound, moved with their family to Kerrville in 1985, he to take a job as a research scientist with the U.S. Department of Agriculture and she to open a Merle Norman Store in the Winwood Shopping Center. Later they had a building constructed on Thompson Drive, where Celia now operates Celia's Closet and Merle Norman. While in high school, Shannon helped in the store on afternoons and Saturdays.

Shannon received her high school education in Kerrville. During her senior year, she participated in the Young Woman of the Year Contest, winning on the local and state levels and going on to national, where she won in the scholarship competition. She had her first ballet lesson at age three, and, throughout her years in Kerrville, she had continued with ballet. Hence, when she entered the Young Woman of the Year competition, she chose to perform Saint-Saens' "Dying Swan" as her talent. During these years, she also participated in youth activities at First United Methodist Church and joined the church. One year, she went with the youth on their ski trip, the memory of which she cherished.

In 1990, Shannon entered the University of Texas at Austin, enrolling in art and philosophy classes at first, but soon changed to science classes, with the idea of going to medical school. She said that she saw in these disciplines a strong humanitarian element. She received the baccalaureate degree with honors in 1994 and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa, the prestigious honorary society founded in Virginia in 1776.

That fall, she entered Southwestern Medical School in Dallas and received the M.D. degree in 1998. She selected this school, she said, because of the hands-on experience she was sure she would receive. At Southwestern, she developed a distinguished record, which earned her the Hemphill-Gojer Award in Internal Medicine, the Excellence in Pathology Award, and the Ho Din, the highest honor that Southwestern gives. Ho Din is a Greek term meaning honor, compassion and dedication. This award was presented at graduation by Vestor Hughes, a prominent Dallas attorney. It consists of a symbolic key, a certificate with the seal of the Southwestern Medical Foundation and a cash award of $7,500. In addition to these awards, she received numerous accolades. Dr. Glenn Burnett, who had the responsibility of talking with patients that Shannon treated in her Internal Medicine Rotation, said, "What impressed me the most (about Shannon) was her ability to communicate with patients. She had some whose cases were complicated, and she became almost like part of their families. ... She's absolutely brilliant, the best student I've worked with." And the President of Southwestern Medical Foundation said, "When the Southwestern Medical Foundation trustees established an award in 1943 to be known as Ho Din to honor the spirit of medical wisdom and human understanding, they had someone like Shannon Neville in mind." He added that she was selected not only for her academic standing but "also for those inherent personal attributes embodied in all great physicians."

When Shannon left Dallas, she went to the Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis for her residency and was half through the program when she discovered that she had the worst kind of brain cancer. After difficult surgery, weeks of radiation and a recovery period, she became a Catholic, and she and Dr. McGarry Houghton were married in the beautiful St. Francis Xavier College Church in St. Louis. It is remarkable that McGarry proposed marriage after Shannon discovered brain cancer and had surgery, even though, as a doctor, he knew what lay ahead for her. Indeed, it would be hard to think of a more noble expression of romantic love.

Shannon succeeded in finishing her residency, and, determined to get rid of the cancer, she began a struggle that lasted more than eight years. The way she retained hope was amazing. She had one chemo treatment after another and numerous MRIs. At one time she was in remission. She had the best medical care available. She was sustained by her strong faith, by a loving family and by the love that she and McGarry had for one another. A doctor himself, he was her main caregiver. He was with her all the way, on their trips to M.D. Anderson while they were in St. Louis, their years at Harvard and later at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. When she began to need intensive care, he took a sabbatical in order to be with her constantly. Struggling to speak when words failed her near the end of her days, she once insisted on taking medication to help her remain lucid, finally finding the words, "I think each day is important."

Despite her numerous accolades and the success she enjoyed in nearly every discipline which attracted her attention, Shannon professed a strong belief that the sum of a life is greater than accomplishments achieved and items attained. By way of practical and humble daily example, she taught her family and friends how to live a life that conveys love and strength, humor and compassion, grace and dignity - regardless of whether the given day be an embrace or a battle. Whether asking about the health of the otherwise disgruntled orderly who brought her food while she was hospitalized for seizures, or whether acknowledging the pride of her medical professors after they awarded her Southwestern's most prestigious honor, Shannon consistently expressed an effortless, unprejudiced, equal-tempered respect for all persons. Daily, she elevated those around her through a manner of expression at once as meek, simple and genuine as it was firm, intelligent and informed by divinity. Her legacy is the transcendental example she provided, the limitless warm energy she still conveys through memory, and a love which lingers beyond the bounds of the physical life which she tragically surrendered.

Shannon is survived by her husband, Dr. McGarry Houghton of Pittsburgh, Pa; her mother and stepfather, Celia and Dr. Mat Pound, Kerrville; her father and stepmother, Richard and Cathy Neville, Woodstock, Ga; her brother, Patrick Sean Neville, his wife, Pamela, and daughter, Caitlyn, of Lexington, Mass; her sister, Heather Warwick, her husband, Todd, and children, Kylie and Justin, of Surrey, London, England; her half-sister, Lauren Neville and daughter, Laci, of Woodstock, Ga; her maternal grandparents, Dr. Lawrence Huff and Mrs. Elouise Huff of Kerrville; her paternal grandfather, Judge Joe Neville and stepgrandmother, Mrs. Reba Neville of Statesboro, Ga; her aunt, Catherine Black of Dedham, Mass; several uncles and cousins; and her in-laws, Mr. and Mrs. Ashley Houghton of Tulsa, Okla.

She was predeceased by paternal grandmother, Beverly Neville.

A memorial service for Dr. Houghton will be held at the First United Methodist Church, Kerrville, on Sunday, March 30, 4:30 p.m., with the Rev. Warren Hornung and Father Mike Boulette officiating.

In lieu of flowers, memorial checks may be made payable to "Shannon Neville Houghton Scholarship Fund" and mailed to The University of Texas at Austin, P.O. Box 7458, Austin, TX 78713-7458. This scholarship commemorates Shannon's dual interest in the sciences and the arts by supporting young people who have similar academic excellence and interdisciplinary talent.
