HOUGHTON, Mildred (Bradshaw) Higgins

Mildred (Bradshaw) Higgins Houghton, 97, beloved wife of the late Andrew Houghton, of Granby, died peacefully Friday, (October 4, 2002) at the Loomis House, Holyoke, MA. Born in Boston, MA, daughter of Robert A. and Ethel L. (Currier) Bradshaw, she lived in Granby, for over 42 years before moving to Holyoke in 1995. Prior to her retirement in 1975, Mildred taught English in the Granby School System for 18 years and took students on study tours in the summer to Europe. She graduated cum laude from Oberlin College, Ohio, Class of 1928, and taught children of U.S. servicemen in France and Germany. She was a member of the First Congregational Church of Granby, a former deacon, past president of the church Ona Scheibe Group, and was a member of the Women's Fellowship. She was past president of the Granby Education Association, a member of the Granby Senior Citizens, and was the first editor of Golden Gleanings, a publication of the Granby senior citizens, and became the first municipal agent for Granby seniors. Mildred started the Vial of Life program in Granby, and was an active volunteer at Granby tax collector's office, a helper at the library, volunteered at the McLean Home and drove for the Meals-on-Wheels program. She served on the local chapter of the American Association of Retired Persons and was a member of the advisory council for the Granby Superintendent of Schools. She was honored as Granby's Community Citizen of the Year by the Granby Grange at an award ceremony in March 1991. Amidst all these activities she had found time to write poetry and had a poem published in the fall, 1991 issue of Treasured Poems of America. She is survived by her beloved children, Richard A. Higgins of Pompano Beach, FL and Audrey Rich of East Longmeadow, MA; three grandchildren, James A. Rich of Springfield, MA, Marilyn Rich and her husband John Funk of Portland, OR, and Karen Rich and her husband Charles Garcia of Yonkers, NY. She also leaves two sisters, Phyllis B. Shirley of Springfield, MA and Nina Ruth Beckman. Besides her husband, she was predeceased by a son-in-law, Dr. J. Gordon Rich of Springfield, MA. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, October 12, 11 a.m., in the First Congregational Church, 219 North Granby Road, Rt 189, Granby. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the First Congregational Church Memorial Fund, 219 North Granby Road, Granby, CT 06035; The Mildred B. Houghton Endowed Scholarship Fund, Oberlin College, 50 West Lorain Street, Oberlin, OH 44074-1089; or to the Hospice Life Care of Holyoke, 28 Appleton Street, Holyoke, MA 01040. Survivors include his wife; daughters, Brenda Bodnar and Elizabeth Zappa; sons, Gregory and Ronald; nine grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. His daughter Cheri Feigt died in 1997.¹

He was a veteran of World War II. serving in the U.S. Army Air Forces, a Paul Harris Fellow of Rotary International and member of Harmony Zelienople United Methodist Church and Pennsylvania State University Alumni Association. He was a member of the Fenton United Methodist Church. Surviving are: wife, Doris; 4 children, Richard Houghton and wife Beverly of Howell, Jon Houghton and wife Melinda of Rochester, Joann Houghton Johnson of Troy, Valerie Henderson and husband Lyall of Clarkston; 8 grandchildren; sister, Edna Mahony; brother, Albert Houghton, both of Toronto.
