Clive Napier, Australia: My Grandfather's mother was Emma Louise Houghton who lived at Gravesend Kent UK. His father was a pilot who escorted boats up the Thames estuary to London.
-My Grandfather whom I knew well was born at Victoria Av, Gravesend on 5/5/1870. His father was Lt.Colonel James Stephens Nicholson whose family came from Berwick upon Tweed UK. James S Nicholson served in the British Army in India.
James and Emma apparently lived at several places in Gravesend and Milton( a near by area). We are unable to find any record of their marriage despite checking Parish records etc during visits to the YUCK. In several census records they are recorded as a Married couple.. They produced my Grandfather in 1970 and a daughter Mabel Grace 3 years later. It appears that the marriage later broke up as Emma took my Grandfather to South Australia where she was thought to have relations. My grandfather and Emma returned to England after a few years and my Grandfather continued his education at the International School London.
Mabel Grace married an Officer in the British Army in India and they had two sons but as far as we know no male offspring. Despite numerous efforts I have failed to trace any living relationship in this direction. Their family name was Cunningham Hughes.
We do have asepia photo of Mabel Grace with baby,and husband (also a Lt Col.) and a mature lady at a Hill Station in India . My mother stated that the mature lady was Emma Louise Nicholson(nee Houghton)and that the photo was taken c.1897.
My Grandfatherreturned to South Australia and married the daughter of a well known family in Adelaide.The couple came to Western Australia in the 1890s with my mother as a baby. My mother married D,C, Napier ,my father, and unfortunately my Grandfather died in 1958when I was only 29 and not greatly interested in genealogy
The above can mainly be substantiated through records such as Birth Certificates and electoral roles and Census records. Sadly my mother died in 1985 before I had reached the stage of wondering about the marriage of her grandparents.
