Rick Kissiah: I say possibly as to Sheryl because there are two, possibly three ladies who are in the family who go by the nickname Sherry or variations on the spelling of same, the Sherry I talked to told me that she was the daughter of James, Sr.'s brother or half brother Thomas Russell Haughton, but the obituary on James Haughton, Jr. lists her as a sister of his.¹

I understand that you are something of an expert on the ancestry of the Haughton/Haughton family and I am hopeful that you might be able to help me.

Until recently, I had thought for all of my sixty eight years that my father was Joe Kissiah, a career FBI agent. My wife got me a 23andMe DNA test as a gift because of ongoing confusion as to whether I had Native American ancestors. The test results said I do not. The results confirmed that I share DNA with my mother’s nieces so that confirms that my mother was in fact my mother.

My second cousin on my father’s (Kissiah) side ended up getting a 23andMe DNA test and both he and I were surprised that neither of us were shown as DNA relatives of one another. This was especially surprising in light of the fact that he and I were grandsons of twin Kissiah grandfathers. More Kissiah folks got tested and their results showed my cousin as a Kissiah DNA relative but do not show me as a Kissiah DNA relative. We asked 23andMe to reanalyze the DNA and, a few months ago, they reconfirmed that I do not have Kissiah DNA.

What I do have a good bit of is Haughton DNA. In fact, I share Haughton DNA with at least four different Haughtons. I’ve been in touch with them and they noted that James D. Haughton, had three wives, ten kids, and I’ve been researching on Ancestry.com. I’ve also done the Ancestry DNA test and I’m awaiting the results of it to act as a double check of the analysis and reanalysis of DNA by 23andMe.

It looks to me as though my biological father may well have been James Duane Haughton (1926-1980). James’ mother was Marjorie Elsie Levan (1903-1946) of Grundy County TN. Marjorie’s parents were Isham Levan and Lula Summers. As to James Duane Haughton’s father, most submitters to Ancestry.com list Walter C. Haughton (1906 MS-1969 GA), who married Marjorie Elsie Levan in 1933. However, James was born seven years earlier than the start of their marriage. While Marjorie stated on the 1930 Census that she had been married in 1923/4 and was divorced by the time of the 1930 Census, there is no record of any such 1923/4 marriage or divorce that I could find. Further, each of the Chattanooga City Directories listing her from 1924 through 1932, lists her as Miss Marjorie Levan. Most importantly, one submitter to Ancestry.com, who thinks she may have gotten the information from your group, says that James Duane Haughton’s biological father was James Layne of Madison County AL rather than Walter Haughton.

All of the folks in question, including my parents, have long since passed away. I’m well situated and not looking to get anything from anyone. However, I would like to know who my real father is and whatever I can learn about him. Any information you would be willing to provide on James Haughton, the identity of his father, etc would be most appreciated. Thanks,

Obituary

William Harrison Beene, Jr., 82, of Chattanooga, died on Friday, March 28, 2008.
Mr. Beene was a 1944 graduate of Chattanooga Central High school. He worked for TVA for 38 years at John Sevier Steam Plant in Rogersville, while residing in Morristown, Tn., and was president and business managner of IBEW Local 365 for 15 years. Mr. Beene was preceded in death by his parents, William H. Beene, Sr. and Willie Martin Beene; brothers, Charles, Edward and Robert Beene; sisters, Frances VanDyke, Virginia Espy, Lucile Talley and Wanda Beene. He is survived by one son, William H. (Sonny) Beene, III; and five stepchildren, James D., William Todd, Ronald E. Donald E. and Sheryle A. Haughton. A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. on Monday, at the Chattanooga National Cemetery with Rev. Melvin Walker officiating. Interment will be at Chattanooga National Cemetery.
