The Al-Tro Island Park formally opened on Memorial Day in 1907 and consisted of a boardwalk 900 feet long and 40 feet wide with amusements along each side. It boasted thousands of electric lights, a theater with 4,000 seats, its own miniature railroad, a roller skating rink, dance hall, pony track, roller coaster, and more than a hundred other attractions. The Al-Tro even had its own police force consisting of Chief Detective Humphrey of the New York Central force and a platoon of 15 uniformed officers to maintain safety and order at the park.
It is unknown exactly how long the park existed, and very few people remember it today. It was served by the Albany and Troy Boat Line which took passengers to the park from either city for five or ten cents. The park could also be reached by walking along the Erie Canal bank and down Garbrance Lane (present day Simmons Lane off Broadway in Menands.) No trace of the park exists today, and the area is now covered by I-787.
