The greatest concentration of resorts on Lake Ontario was just to the east, in Rochester. Starting in the 1870's excursion trains brought people to Rochester from as far away as Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Ohio to enjoy the cooling lake breezes. Bartholomay Park was first, opened in 1874 by the owner of Rochester's largest brewery.
