Note* | | 8 Nov 1906 Milford Herald Newspaper PORTER LOST GOOD CITIZEN Philip B. Clark man of many offices is dead Philip B. Clark called by many the Pooh Bah of Pike County, by reason of his having held so many offices in the little township of Porter, in that county, died at his home there at 2 oÙuclock on Tuesday afternoon of last week after a painful illness suffering from a complication of diseases, aged 70 years and 6 days. Mr. Clark was truly a quaint character and it is a question whether there is a man in Porter better known hereabouts than he. His long shaggy locks, evidence of age brought him out strikingly. He held the office of squire for years and his advice was much sought after. It is said of him that he held every office in the little township where he held a position almost monarchial in nature and at one period of his life held seven offices at one and the same time. Many were the jokes and jests passed at his expense but he was of good natured, jovial disposition that can stand a joke. He would only laugh enjoying it as much as those about him. He gained an enviable reputation as a killer of rattlesnakes and was also a noted as a bear hunter Mr. Clark was the Democratic leader in his township and it is said the vote was always cast as he desired. While only from 8 to 15 ballots were cast each election, and the district wasnÙut deemed very important in the recent Democratic primary in the county it proved the pivotal point and the vote decided the nomination for one of the candidates for associated judges. This much can be truthfully said Mr. Clark will be greatly missed by a great many people. He is survived by the following children: Samuel Clark, Mrs. Emma Bosler and Mary Clark of Paterson; Mrs. Olive Drake of Pen Argyl; Mrs. Oliver Heater of East Stroudsburg; Adam Clark of Bangor and Joseph at home. He is also survived by the following grandchildren: Katie & Helen Heater of East Stroudsburg, and Ruth and Russell Clark of Paterson.1 |
