The minutes of the Quarter Sessions, Cumberland County, February Term, 1797, show that Tamsen Elwell filed a petition for a license to keep a public house where she now dwells in Roadstown. It was allowed, the sureties being James Johnson, Wm. Miller, and Abner Sheppard. At the February Term, 1798, the license was renewed, the surties being Forman Shepherd and Josiah Seeley. Another renewal appears at the February Term 1799. None appear in the lists for 1800, 1801, and 1802.
