The minutes of the Quarter Sessions, Cumberland County, February Term, 1797, show that Tamsen Elwell filed a petition for a license to keep a public house where she now dwells in Roadstown. It was allowed, the sureties being James Johnson, Wm. Miller, and Abner Sheppard. At the February Term, 1798, the license was renewed, the surties being Forman Shepherd and Josiah Seeley. Lura Jane Elwell (nee Beal)
Lifelong Area Resident
Lura Jane Elwell (nee Beal), 91, of Hopewell Township and a longtime resident of Greenwich died early Wednesday morning December 22, 2010 at The Cumberland Manor while under the care of hospice.
She was the widow of Edward Lloyd Elwell, who died in 1998. Born in Sayres Neck, she was the daughter to the late Frank and Bessie (nee Simpkins) Beal. She was raised in Fairton and after her marriage lived in Greenwich for 60 years before entering “The Manor” five years ago.
Mrs. Elwell was a homemaker for most of her life and also worked in food preparation for the Hancock family when the Bait Box Restaurant opened at Hancock’s Harbor in Greenwich. She later worked for the Greenwich School District as a school bus driver and before retiring was employed again in food preparation at Stow Creek Township School.
She had been an active member of the Greenwich Baptist Church since 1944. She was also a member of the Cumberland County Board of Elections and served in Greenwich Township.
Her interests included antiques, arts and crafts and gardening.
Mrs. Elwell is survived by two sons, Edward Charles Elwell (Lillian) of Stow Creek Twp. and Richard E. Elwell Sr. (Sharleen) of Greenwich, one daughter, Joycemarie Burns of Shiloh, eight grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend the funeral service at the Freitag Funeral Home, 137 W. Commerce St., Bridgeton on Wednesday afternoon December 29th at 2 o’clock where friends will be received from 1 until 2.
The burial will take place in the family cemetery lot at Overlook Cemetery in Bridgeton.
Memorial contributions are suggested in Mrs. Elwell’s memory to the Cumberland Manor Activities Fund, 154 Sunny Slope Drive, Bridgeton, NJ 08302 or to SJ Health Care – HospiceCare, PO Box 160, Bridgeton, NJ 08302.
