NoteBOUDWYN HOUWY, SON OF JOHN HOUWY OF SMITHFIELD

Although he is not in the direct line of descent, Boudwyn Howey remains an important figure in the family history. The records of Northampton, Wayne, and Pike counties from 1790 onward indicate that John of Lehman was raised from a very young age in the household of Bowdewin (var. sp.) of Delaware Township. It is likely, however, that Bowdewin was JohnÙus uncle, not his father. See further discussion under John of Lehman.
This chapter includes some facts supporting those conclusions, and introduces the two men whom we believe to be the sons of Bowdewin--Robert and William Howey.
Unlike his older brother, John, Bowdewin appears frequently in Pennsylvania records in the last decades of the 1700Ùus. As stated earlier, he was born and baptized in 1749 in what was then Smithfield, Bucks County. He next appears on tax lists of Northampton County for 1776, then again in 1778. These records place Bowdewin, now in his late 20's, in Delaware Township apparently still in the household of his father, John of Smithfield. Subsequent tax records, however, covering the period from 1778 to 1801 place them in both Lower Smithfield and Delaware Townships. These were adjoining townships sharing a segment of the Big Bushkill as a common boundary. The Northampton County tax records for 1785 place Bowdewin in Lower Smithfield in April but in Delaware Township in June. Did Bowdewin move across the Bushkill, or was this a correction to the tax rolls to place the 90+ acre tract on which Bowdewin lived in the correct location-Delaware Township.
From 1778 to 1781 Bowdewine served as a Revolutionary War soldier and his service is amply documented in the Pennsylvania Archives.
Following his discharge from the Militia, he returned to the Bushkill area, appearing on tax lists for both Lower Smithfield and Delaware townships.
Additional evidence of his presence there appears in a warrant survey that may have involved the land he was living on. On 10 December, 1784, a tract of land of 90+ acres in Delaware Township was surveyed to James Hyndshaw by virtue of a warrant granted on 16 October, 1766. The title page of the survey document bears an inscription as follows: ÙSJames Hyndshaw now Bowdewine Howy'. The phrase in italics is lined out. Furthermore, the 1766 warrant to Hyndshaw that authorized the survey describes a totally different tract both in size and location.
Subsequent records reveal that some uncertainty existed as to who owned what land, uncertainty that was eventually resolved by Court action in 1803.
In 1785 Bowdewine was granted a Warrant for 299+ acres of land in Delaware Township located on now Saw Creek about a mile upstream from the 90+ acre tract discussed above. It appears that Bowdewine paid for this land with Revolutionary War service certificates authorized as specie for this purpose only by an act of the Pennsylvania Assembly in April, 1784.
In the first census of the new republic--1790--he is listed as Bowdawin Howe, age greater than 16, (he was 41) heading a household in Delaware Township of 3 males under 16 and 4 females, ages not given. Robert, William, and John Howey, all prominent in later records of the area, fit this age category. Moreover, the later records support the conclusion that Robert and William are sons of Bowdewin, and John is his nephew. For instance, William named his first son Bowdoine.
In the 1800 U.S. census for Delaware Twp Bowdewin is again listed as head of household, age greater than 45. He would have been 51 at this time. The household also includes a female more than 45 years old, presumably his wife; 2 males under 10; and 1 male 16 to 25. The 2 males listed as under 10 do not match age-wise with the 1790 census because they would now be older than 10. This is assumed to be a census error. The oldest of the young males, 16 to 25 is presumed to be John of Lehman, age 21 at the time. The 2 younger males are presumed to be William (11) and Robert (15).
In this census no other Howe(y) families appear in all of Wayne and Northampton counties.
In 1804 signs of trouble emerge. On January 12, 1804, Northampton county sheriff Abraham Rinker sold 90 (or 60?) acres of land taken from Badewin (sic) Howey to William Barnet.
This is the last appearance we have found of the first Bowdewin. We have found no death/burial record nor a Will or other document of inheritance. Moreover, we have not found who Bowdewin married, nor any birth or baptism records for his children.
It should be noted that many years later, in the 1840 census for Lehman Township a Bowdoine Howey appears as a head of household, age 20 to 30. The evidence confirms that this is William's son, a grandson and namesake of the Bowdewin discussed above.
A chronology of the documented records of Bowdewine is included below. Sources for events mentioned above are included in the chronology
