Note* | Based on the information in the Howey newletter article information from Josephine Emma Howey it seem likely that Walter Howey (b. Apt 1857) is the child refered to as the result of a rape since he was born prior to the marriage of Edward Howey (b.1837) and Mary Davis in 1861. It would appear Walter was adopted by Edward and then he and Mary had biological son William in 1863.9

Note* | Was in the county almshouse during the early part of his life. THE COUNTY ALMSHOUSE.-- The first mention found on record relating to the care of the poor of Gloucester County is in the minutes of the proceedings of the justices and freeholder, June 10, 1765, when Wm. Hugg and Samuel Harrison were allowed L62 16S, 2d for repairs to the house. In 1770 repairs were ordered, but no mention is made of the location and character of the building. In 1799 Samuel Cooper, James Hopkins and James Stratton were directed to look after a site, but failing to report, the Board of Freeholders, in August, 1800, appointed Samuel Cooper, Jas. Hurley, John Hider, Samuel W. Harrison, Amos Cooper, Wm. Ford, Jas. Stratton, John Collins, Richard Westcott and Elias Smith a committee to purchase a site. The committee selected one hundred and twenty-five acres of land on the south side of Timber Creek, in Deptford township, belonging to Michael Fisher. The consideration was $3333.331/2 and the deed conveying the land to the Board of Chosen Freeholders of Gloucester County was dated December 12, 1800. A building committee was appointed,--Samuel Cooper, Jacob Stokes, John Brick, Amos Cooper, Samuel P. Paul, Enoch Allen, Epoch Leeds, Thomas Somers, Elias Smith and Isaac Tomlinson,--who contracted with Edmund Brewer and John C. Morgan to erect the almshouse for five thousand six hundred dollars. In 1812 the freeholders purchased two hundred and forty-eight acres of woodland, near Williamstown, for the purpose of supplying the almshouse with fuel. When coal was substituted and no use of the woodland had been made for a number of years, the ownership was forgotten, until 1882, when Timothy J. Middleton, then clerk of the board, called attention to the fact. In 1822 the adjoining farm of Jedediah Morgan, about one hundred and sixty acres, was purchased. The almshouse was enlarged from time to time as necessity demanded. The small building for the insane was built in 181y. Upon the erection of Camden County, in 1844, the two counties used the almshouse jointly under direction of a joint committee until 1861, when, under an act of the Legislature, the property was sold, and the present farm of one hundred and forty-four acres, containing the buildings, together with the woodland, was bought by Camden County for $19,802. Timber Creek is the dividing line between the two counties, but an act of the Legislature rectified the line so as to place the almshouse farm in Camden County. A new almshouse was built in 1864, which was enlarged in 1877 and again in 1881. In the latter a hospital ward was erected separate from the main building, and so thus arranged, the Camden County Almshouse is regarded as one of the most complete in the State. The farm and buildings, including the Insane Asylum, are valued at ninety thousand dollars. In the fall of 1880 an epidemic of typhoid fever broke out in the institution, decimating the ranks of the inmates, including the steward, Isaac P. Wilson, who had filled the position from the date that Camden County first took sole possession. The stewards have been Isaac P. WIlson, 1861-81; Alfred Harris, 1881-86; and Charles F. Adams. The annual cost is about one thousand eight hundred dollars.13

Event-Misc | 1865 | He was Message from Bess Beal Boylan 17 Feb 2010. [ This story corroborate the military records I found for Lewis Howey] Bob the only proof I have about gread grand and the civil war came from family, my mom your dad and Lewis howey. I went to talk to him when he lived in Tuckerton . The story he told me was that G Grandpop was in a bar in Phila, and some man was boo hooing about having to go to war and at that time you could pay someone to take your place. Grandpop said how much ? He said $500 and was suposed to send it to the family.which the man never did.Lewis was your dads cousin and Edward Lewis's name sake and they used to go fishing a lot together and grandpop would tell stories while they waited for the fish. Lewis the grand son told me that when the war was over grandpop was down virginia way and a group of guys decided not to wait to be mustered out they were in a hurry to get back home to theif familys They found their own way home. Now this is Lewis's storyand I don't know how much is dependable but I don't think he would fib about it. I don't know if you could find records in Penn or New Jersey Talk to you later cousin Bess in 1865. |
Milit-Beg* | 7 January 1865 | He began military service on 7 January 1865 at Norristown, Montgomery Co., Pennsylvania, RTH 26 Oct 2003 - A family story was handed down via cousin Becky Lou Boylan that "Little Grandpop", Edward Lewis Howey, met a man in a bar in Philadelphia during the Civil War. This man was distraught over being drafted to serve in the Army and Lewis told the man he would serve as his substitute. The service records tend to match that story. The place of birth listed as Germany is quite puzzling, however. The date of birth would be very close since most evidence leads to that fact that Edward was born on 12 Sep 1845. He would have been 19 4/12 years in January 1865 as recorded in the service records. The physical description is not unreasonable based on photographs and descriptions of Edward Lewis Howey.15 |

This information was gathered based on email from Allan Willis, the cemetery caretaker in January 2014 by email. He stated there were handwritten notes in the register. Based on his record of the notes this is what I have been able to construct along with other records I have gathered.
Lot owner Robert L. Howey (Sr.)– the original purchaser would have been by him. He lived from 1873-1951 and was my great-grandfather. He is NOT buried in this lot but is interred at Old Stone Church in Fairton.
Robert L. Howey, Jr. 1905-1964, my grandfather, is NOT buried in this lot. He is buried in Centre Grove.
Grave 6 John?
This would be Jonathan Moses Howey 1869-1921, brother of Robert L. Howey, Sr. His death certificate and obituary indicate burial at Cedar Hill on April 18, 1921.
Grave 5 Debbie?
This would be the wife of Jonathan Moses Howey, Deborah A. (Harris) Howey 1881-1922. Her death certificate and obituary indicate burial at Cedar Hill on November 21, 1922.
Grave 4 – Grandmother?
This one depends on who was the person who said it was their grandmother but very likely is Hannah (Shaw) Howey 1855-1916, mother of Robert L. Howey, Sr. Her death certificate and obituary indicate burial at Cedar Hill on February 15, 1916.
Monument space - Baby? This would be Margarette Howey (1913-1914), infant daughter of Robert L. Sr. and Lucinda (in grave 3) who died in the month following her mother. Death certificate indicates burial at Cedar Hill on March 27, 1914.
Grave 3 – Mrs. Robert L.
Lucinda Williams (Harris) Howey 1886-1914, wife of Robert L Howey, Sr. Her death certificate and obituary indicate burial at Cedar Hill on February 19, 1914. Lucinda died young with TB and I suspect her death would have been the reason to purchase the lot.
Graves 2 and 1– None?
I have no other records that indicate other members of the Howey family that may be buried in this cemetery (except those in C-80). The father of Robert L. Howey, Sr. was Edward Lewis Howey who died January 28, 1932. The death certificate indicates he was buried at CENTER GROVE however I’m a little surprised he would not have been buried in this lot.
