Robert H. Howey, one of Helena's prominent lawyers, dates
his birth in Carroll County Ohio, April 8, 1842. He is of
Scotch-Irish descent. Some of his ancestors settled in
Pennsylvania previous to the Revolution and from there the
family has spread out over various states in the union. The
parents of Robert H. were Ebenezer and Julia Ann (Shaw)
Howey, the former born in Pennsylvania in 1810 and the latter
in Carroll County Ohio in 1820. The Shaws were an old colonial
family and Mrs. Howey's grandfather, Nathan Shaw, served as a
soldier in the Revolution as First Lt. of the First Battalion,
Cumberland County, New Jersey Militia. He fought in the Battle
of Trenton and in various other engagements in that war. Her
father also served in the War of 1812. Mr. Howey's parents had
five children, of whom only two are now living. The father
died in 1861. The mother still survives, now in her seventy-third
year.

Robert H. Howey received his education in the public schools of
Ohio and in Rural Seminary, afterward known as Harlem Springs
College. He also took a course in the McNeily Normal School,
Hopedale, Ohio where he graduated in 1862 receivingthe degree
of B.A. Then he began the study of law under the instructions
of Eckley and McCoy at Carrollton. It was during the Civil War
that he was engaged in the pursuit of his studies but when
Morgan made his famous raid through the state of Ohio young
Howey dropped his studies and joined the Home Guards.

Mr. Howey was admitted to the bar of the District Court of Ohio
at Steubenville in 1867 and there engaged in the practice of
his profession. Later, however, he accepted the position of
Professor of Mathematics in Harlem Springs College. In 1872 he
entered Western Theological Seminary at Alleghany, where in due
time he graduated with high honors.
After his graduation in April 1874 he was ordained by the
Presbytery of Steubenville and was commissioned by the
Presbyterian Board of Home Missions to take charge of a
church at Unionville, Missouri. He at once went to Unionville,
assumed charge as pastor and through his instrumentality, a
church edifice was soon built. Later he was the principal
of the public schools at Unionville. He continued there until
February 1879 when he came to Montana and accepted the position
of principal of the Helena city schools, serving as such for
five successive years. At the end of that time he was appointed
by Governor Potts as Superintendent of Public Instruction for
Montana and served as such most efficiently until February
1883 and while acting in this latter capacity he ws appointed
by the Secretary of the Interior to select the university lands
for Montana. He selected for that purpose seventy-two sections.
Few indeed, have done more to advance the educational interests
of Montana than has Mr. Howey.

Mr. Howey was married March 14, 1870 to Laura E. Spencer, of
Cadiz Ohio, a graduate of Beaver College Pennsylvania with the
class of 1868. She was at the time of their marriage and for
several years after, engaged in teaching instrumental and vocal
music. Since their coming to Helena she has been president of
the W.C.T.U. of Montana and has delivered numerous lectures and
organized many unions in Montana.

Head of household is Lewis Howey, (no age given) who is working as a waterman on oysterboats. His home is rented. Wife Hannah A. is listed as 58 years old and she has been married 40 years. She has borne 8 children, two of whom are still living. Son Robert L. is living in house, he is age 37 and has been married 6 years. He is a wage worker in a sandwash. Event-Misccirca 16 February 1914He was Lot C-93 at Cedar Hill Cemetery, Cedarville, Lawrence Twp., Cumberland Co., NJ.

This information was gathered based on email from Allan Willis, the cemetery caretaker in January 2014 by email. He stated there were handwritten notes in the register. Based on his record of the notes this is what I have been able to construct along with other records I have gathered.

Lot owner Robert L. Howey (Sr.)– the original purchaser would have been by him. He lived from 1873-1951 and was my great-grandfather. He is NOT buried in this lot but is interred at Old Stone Church in Fairton.

Robert L. Howey, Jr. 1905-1964, my grandfather, is NOT buried in this lot. He is buried in Centre Grove.

Grave 6 John?
This would be Jonathan Moses Howey 1869-1921, brother of Robert L. Howey, Sr. His death certificate and obituary indicate burial at Cedar Hill on April 18, 1921.

Grave 5 Debbie?
This would be the wife of Jonathan Moses Howey, Deborah A. (Harris) Howey 1881-1922. Her death certificate and obituary indicate burial at Cedar Hill on November 21, 1922.

Grave 4 – Grandmother?
This one depends on who was the person who said it was their grandmother but very likely is Hannah (Shaw) Howey 1855-1916, mother of Robert L. Howey, Sr. Her death certificate and obituary indicate burial at Cedar Hill on February 15, 1916.

Monument space - Baby? This would be Margarette Howey (1913-1914), infant daughter of Robert L. Sr. and Lucinda (in grave 3) who died in the month following her mother. Death certificate indicates burial at Cedar Hill on March 27, 1914.

Grave 3 – Mrs. Robert L.
Lucinda Williams (Harris) Howey 1886-1914, wife of Robert L Howey, Sr. Her death certificate and obituary indicate burial at Cedar Hill on February 19, 1914. Lucinda died young with TB and I suspect her death would have been the reason to purchase the lot.

Graves 2 and 1– None?
I have no other records that indicate other members of the Howey family that may be buried in this cemetery (except those in C-80). The father of Robert L. Howey, Sr. was Edward Lewis Howey who died January 28, 1932. The death certificate indicates he was buried at CENTER GROVE however I’m a little surprised he would not have been buried in this lot.

DOWNE TWP. -John J. Baker, a Korean War veteran, used to live in Cedarville, and so did three of his friends who also were veterans of the Korean War.

With Veterans Day approaching, Baker wrote his brother, Fred, also a Cedarville resident, and asked that local folks remember these "three fallen warriors."

Lawrence J. Capelli, deceased. was in Company K, 31st Reg., U.S. 7th Infantry Division.

He was stationed at Inchon, Suwon, Osan, Seoul, Kimpo, Chosin Reservoir and Yalu River, in North Korea, and on the Manchurian border. .

Romaine Howey, U.S. Navy, USS Battleship Missouri, served off North and South Korean Coast, near Wonsan, Hamhung, Sudong, Hungnam and the Manchurian border.

Harry R. DeNofio, Company F, 27th Reg., U.S. 25th Infantry Division, served at Masan, Sanchong and Kumsan in North Korea and on the Manchurian border.

    He was killed in action.

John J. Baker, who asks that these local men be remembered, was in Hq's 34th Reg., U.S. 24th Infantry Division.

Baker served at Taejon, Kumchon, Waegwan and Taegu in North Korea and on the Manchurian border.

Baker refers to Korea as "The war that never was, 1950-1953, 33,567 killed in action, 103,000 wounded, 8,100 MIA/POW Still in North Korea."

Baker is living today in California.

He thought, with Veterans Day approaching, local citizens would like to remember these men.
