Thomas Louis Matalucci Jr., 83, of Mullica Hill and formerly of Elsinboro passed away on Wednesday afternoon June 12, 2013.
He was born in Bridgeton on February 8, 1930 and was the son of the late Thomas Louis Sr. and Lena A. (nee Constatine) Matalucci. Tom was a 1948 graduate of Bridgeton High School where he was regarded as an outstanding athlete. He had the honor of playing fullback on the BHS state championship team of 1947. The team completed the season undefeated and untied. He was also a member of the SJ Tennis Championship Team in 1948.
Throughout his life, Tom continued to play tennis which was his true passion. In 1961, he won the SJ Tennis Championship for his age group. He also taught the first tennis class in Penns Grove in 1968. In addition, he established the Don Haines Tournament in memory of a former teacher, friend and tennis coach. This tournament ran successfully for several years. Tom took great pride in the youth of his community and helped many young athletes realize their true potential in sports and in life.
In 2001, after reading about the struggling Salem Girls’ Tennis team, he decided, at the age of 71, to assist the team. Day after day he spent his summers teaching the girls about the sport of tennis. His consistent devotion to practicing with these young ladies, led to the first-ever winning season. He took great pride and cherished the moments he spent helping them.
In late years, Tom stayed active by running, playing tennis and pinochle and visiting with his friends and former teammates at the Bridgeton All Sports Hall of Fame.
He worked for most of his working career at the EI DuPont Company, Chambers Works facility in Deepwater. He was a lab technician until his retirement in 1982.
He was predeceased by his wife, Esther Elaine, in 2008 and Tom is survived by his children, Kipp Matalucci of Blackwood, Robin Montresor (Joe) of Vineland, Sherry Benjamin (Neil) of Glassboro and Mark Matalucci (Curry) of Richwood, nine grandchildren, Michael Rappa (Jennifer), Michelle Martha (Jay), Adrienne Benjamin (Michael), Gregory and Bridget Benjamin, Matthew, Amber, Nicholas and Mark Tyler Matalucci and one great grandson, James Michael Martha. He is also survived by one sister, Joy Cootauco (Frank) and one brother, David Matalucci, three nieces and one nephew and step-children, Judith Coates, Jeanne Segal (Mike), Barbara Shade, Linda Worthington (John) and Beth Reed (Joe).
Relatives and friends are invited to attend the funeral service at the Freitag Funeral Home, 137 W. Commerce St., Bridgeton on Tuesday June 18th at 10 AM.
Friends will be received at the funeral home Monday evening from 6 until 8 and also from 9 until 10 on Tuesday.
The interment will take place at Fernwood Memorial Park in Hopewell Township.
Memorial contributions are suggested in Tom’s memory to the All Sports Museum of Southern New Jersey, c/o City of Bridgeton, 181 E. Commerce St., Bridgeton, NJ 08302.
