It was hoped that some definitive proof could be found before publication date, but no one seems to be able to offer [IT:]documentary [:IT] evidence." "I have been told that Elizabeth was a Shaw, that she was a Robinson, being a sister of Henry and Amariaqh Robinson(see (24) and (15)). Clearly there isw some connection with Rachael, Harriet, and Rebecca Bailey. p. 39 "REBECCA BAILEY (Edward^8, Edward^2, Edward^1). Although Rebecca's connection to the Baileys has been severely questioned, the author is satisfied that she, along with Harriet Shaw, are children of Edward Bailey. I have talked with her son Alfred, who was born in 1850 and ....he said his mother was born a Bailey, havinglater been kept by some Robinsons." A page found in the notes of Norman W. Bailey at Cumberland County Historical Scoiety Library in January 2013 finds a letter from Jeanette (Bailey) Dickinson evidently in a letter to NWB dated 22 August 1945 from Cedarville. This letter states "...I know that Aunt Lib was Elizabeth Robison [sic] and Rebecca & Harriet Shaw were her sisters, I have heard my father say this and Aunt Lib told my mother that she was a Robison but was brought up by a Bailey and the same Bailey brought upone of her sisters. Note* | Case for Harriet Bailey as the daughter of Daniel Bailey (NWB#7) c1787-before 1830 Not the daughter of Edward III (NWB#8, incorrectly as #12 on p. 20) Other than NWB book I've found nothing that supports the conclusion the Harriet named as born 1834 was the one married to Jont Shaw A Harriet born in 1834 is too young Dau of Ed III said to be born 1834 Harriet had her first child w Jont Shaw in 1841 (James) - listed as 19 in 1860 census. N Also in 1860 - Elizabeth 14, Hannah 13, John, 12 - all would have been born by time Harriet 1834 was 14. Not the daughter of Daniel 1804-1858(NWB#11) (w son Joseph named in will) No record of Daniel 1804 having a daughter Harriet. Joseph is only child named in will 1858. Supports her being the daughter of Daniel Bailey 1787 (NWB#7)and Mary Simmon/Emmons Harriet was born between 1820 and 1821 by 1860 and 1880 census This age makes more sense to have children beginning in 1841 Harriet parents named as Daniel and Mary on DC (note, however Harriet was born Aug 1828 according to death certificate) NWB has very little information on this family casting doubt on the completeness of his research on this family I believe there is evidence Daniel 1787 was dead by 1830 but his widow was still living Mary Bailey household, 1830 US Federal Census, Downe Twp, Cumberland Co., New Jersey. Males - 1 under 5, 1 5-10. Females 1 under 5, 2 5-10, 2 10-15, 1 30-40. Likely all of the children in the 1830 household of Mary Bailey would have been born after 1815 when Daniel Bailey married Mary Simmons/Emmons. I could find no evidence of another person named Mary Bailey (unmarried or married) during this time period. None of the Bailey families appear to have used the name Mary in naming children. At this time I know of no other Bailey that married a woman named Mary. There is no evidence of Daniel Bailey b.1787 being listed in Downe Twp. in 1830. Daniel Bailey b. 1804 is listed as head of household in a household with one male and one female 20-30 and no children. Based on the above I conclude this 1830 household is very likely the widow of Daniel Bailey b.1787 and his children including Harriet Bailey being one of the young females in the household (Males - 1 under 5, 1 5-10. Females 1 under 5, 2 5-10, 2 10-15, 1 30-40). **** Added 19 Jan 2013 There are 3 different theories out there on the parentage of Harriet (Bailey?) Shaw: 1) She's a Robinson raised by Baileys - Jeanette (Bailey) Dickinson letter to NWB 2) She's a daughter of Edward Bailey III (8, mislabeled as 12) and Rachel - NWB's book 3) She's a daughter of Daniel Bailey(7) and Mary Simmons/Emmons - Harriet's death certificate There clearly were family ties through marriage between Bailey and Robison but so far I have nothing documentary that supports anything other that theory #3. Certainly all of them seem plausible. What's odd is the link to Daniel and Mary on Harriet's death record and no mention of this connection anywhere else. NWB and none of his correspondents mention this possible link. For that reason I think it likely to be correct. NWB's lack of much information on Daniel also support my theory they both died young. Daniel seems to have died before the 1830 census. This would seem to fit the theory that Harriet was born a Bailey and may then have been raised by Robinsons or another Bailey family, or perhaps even both before she reached maturity. | |
