Article transcription
IS ONLY FIFTEEN AND YET A BRIDE
Thomas Tilghman Takes Mary A. Webb to Camden and to a Minister.
HER FATHER INDIGNANT
Says He Will Prosecute the Young Man, and in the Meantime Has the Girl Housed.
WAS WEDDED IN SECRET
The Groom Had Known the Bride From Her Childhood and Been Warned to Keep Away.
A secret marriage, which occurred on Sunday last in the New Jersey Mecca of clandestine nuptials, has transformed a Kensington home into a veritable vale of tears. The contracting parties were Miss Mary A. Webb, whose parents reside at No. 712 East Thompson street, and Thomas Tilghman, of 2103 American street.
Miss Webb, according to the family chronicles, will not witness the dawn of her fifteenth year until October next, though when she faced the well-known Rev. Mr. Burrell she laid claim to eighteen years and three months of existence.
It is the youth of the bride that is causing all the trouble, and Henry K. Webb, her father, swears that he will leave no stone unturned to annul the contract. Meanwhile the Webb family is broken-hearted over the affair, and while father and mother talked about it yesterday their eyes constantly filled with tears.
A FATHER’S MISERY.
In a broken voice the father said: “This man has taken my idol from me and she is a mere child. I knew nothing of her having any such intentions and was ignorant of what had occurred until I read the published account of it this morning. Mary has known Tilghman since she was a child, but I never saw them together except once last fall, when I found them talking on a street corner. I told the man then that I did not permit my daughter to have male company, and warned him to stay away from her. Now he has run off with her, but he shall never get her if I can help it.”
THE YOUTHFUL BRIDE
The girl is a slight, pretty brunette, and looks somewhat older than the fifteen years her family allot to her. The young husband is a morocco finisher, and is said to be hard-working and reliable. He is, from all accounts, very much in love with his child-wife and does not consider that he has committed any crime in marrying her. The wife is to all appearances as much in love with him, and neither can understand why there is such a sea of parental objection to the union.
Mr. Webb says he will begin proceedings to-day to have the marriage annulled on the ground of youth of his daughter. He has no charges to make against the character of young Tilghman, with whose father he is very intimate, but he bitterly denounces the runaway.
He saw Mr. Burrell in Camden yesterday, but got little satisfaction beyond being told that the girl swore to 18 years and looked as though she might be fully that age.
Meanwhile young Tilghman is in a most unenviable position. He wants his wife, but she is safely housed in her father’s home and there seems to be little chance of getting her out until the Webbs come to some agreement.
