Note* | From Val Caulfield 16 Feb 2004: Wanted to say this while it is clear in my mind. Sometimes I lose sight of the obvious. The proof, for me anyway, is Mary Webber's will. When she devised land to her son Thomas Jr or should he die without heirs, the same to go to her dau Mary - that is what ties this all together. Henry had left all his estate, real and personal, to his only daughter Mary. Mary could NOT have given lands not held in her own right. We covered that with the Act of Legislature that created Inheritance Laws for that time, and some of Richard's further expansion of the topic of woman's rights and inheritance. Nor was her name even included on the unrecorded deed from Proctor to Thomas Webber, which were the 20 acres in Pennsneck. We don't have a deed for the Mannington lands Webber held later, but those are not the issue. By careful comparison of the Divisions of Lands for both Thomas Webber Sr. and Jr, and the later will of Poultis Risener, then his widow Mary Webber Paullin Risner, it is clear to me that the father's portions were given in every instance via their own wills. The ONLY gap here is what David Paullin may have had or what happened to his estate, though I doubt he left one, as evidenced by Mary's "quit claim" to lands seized from HER for his debt. Richard even had problems with that, for that "courtesy right" to her land should not have been valid unless she had died before him. I suspect somebody screwed up, but woman had precious few rights as it was, she may not have known enough to protest. Had she fought that, she might have won her case in a higher court, and occurs to me to keep her name in mind if I get to browsing through Appellate books...but somehow, I doubt she did. She may have just wanted him out of the debtors prison, though that is where I suspect he most likely died at this point, since we find no other trace. There are likely many who went that way, in unmarked graves. I've seen other instances of how the sheriff and/or creditors would not release a corpse even, if debts not satisfied.6
Note* | Conclusions and note from Val Caulfield.
Note | Analysis by Jerry Vandiver of the fathers of the two Henry Vandeveres I will give a short version of what I am going to maintain until further evidence surfaces as my beliefs. This constitutes version 8. Following this is the long discussion, which is version 7. First, if between West Jersey, Delaware, Pennsylvania and Maryland there were 2 Henry's and 3 Wills/Administrations or 3 Henry's and 2 Wills/Administrations, I would see a real problem. This is not the case. There are 2 Henry's and 2 Wills/Administrations [the core of the long discussion is focused on this fact]. One MUST be the son of Cornelius and the other MUST be the son of Jacobus. As such, they are also first cousins. In determining which was which, I looked at what I have as their Wills and my notes concerning those Wills [I discovered last night that I had a little bit more than I previously thought]. In short, I have decided to go with who would have been associated with whom! Henric Vandever who married Sarah Barber at Old Swedes in Wilmington in 1747, I now reassign as the son of Cornelius Vanderveer. Henric was born between 1697-1712 at Brandywine Hundred. His neighbors growing up were the family of Hendrick Peterson the Holsteiner, the immigrant Englishman Barber who married a daughter of Hendrick Peterson, and his first cousin Peter Derickson (son of Zacharias and Helena Vanderveer Dedricksson). Though he may have acquired property and removed to Penn's Neck as early as 1738 (the same time Peter Derickson does), he married Sarah in Wilmington. She was born in 1728 and remarried to Henry Peterson of Penn's Neck after Henric Vandever died in 1749. His will indicates that he had 1 son named Jacob who must have been born in 1748 and named his wife and life long associate Peter Derickson executors. Henric Vandevear who was the father of Mary, I now assign as the son of Jacobus Vandevear. He was born in 1725, so young when he married and his daughter was born. He and his family had been neighbors of the Knutsson's and Biddel's for MANY years. His Will of 1760 indicates Knutson and Biddel as witnesses. That is the short version with my deciding indicators. What follows is version 7 of the long discussion: Alright. This is it, rewrite #7, regardless of the outcome. I am not familiar enough with the Long Island family to be certain that the father of Mary is not one of them. What I do have makes the idea almost laughable, but it cannot be ruled out if nothing else surfaces. It is certain that there are no Hendrick's amongst the Vandervoort-Vandeford-Vandeveer's during that time frame. I don't believe that anyone would contradict the idea that both Henry's - the one that died in 1749 and the one that died in 1762 - were of the Delaware family, which is the direction you have been pursuing. So, going there: Using the estimated birth of Mary as being 1742, I am going to allow for 10 years either way, so 1732-1752. That would put Henry's date of birth reasonably between 1712-1732 at a minimum, which is to say that he could have been born earlier, but definitely no later than 1732. So, first to identify all Henry's born prior to 1732. In doing this I took into consideration and unknowns, unidentifieds and potential posthumous. The following is a list of each and every Vanderveer in the Delaware family who reached maturity and could have fathered a son by 1732 AND the evidence that exists: Jacop Van der Veer - the immigrant ancestor baptized a son named Hendrick in 1657. It is certain that this child did not reach maturity. In the writing of Jacop's Will (April 1698) there was no mention of a Hendrick or mention of children of a deceased child. When the Will was proven (almost a year later in March 1699) it was administered by his widow Catharina and was not contested in any way. Jacop names 4 sons: Cornelius, John, William and Jacob (who had removed to Penn's Neck by 1698 when the Will was written). Cornelius Vanderveer - eldest son of Jacop to reach maturity, was traditionally born in February 1658/9. Though there is a question as to who is wife was, I still lean towards Margareta Poulson, whom I believe he married in 1684. The information concerning his Will (written December 1712) is the same as with his father's - nothing contested, everyone mentioned. He names 5 sons: Philip, Jacob, John, William and HENRY, the last two being minors, this Henry being our first potential. John Vanderveer - second son of Jacop to reach maturity, was born around 1660/1, one of "two sons" taxable in 1677 (age 16). His wife is unknown, he did not leave a Will and there is nothing to indicate that he had any sons in Delaware or New Jersey records. Circumstantial evidence indicates that he was the father of Jacob Vandeveer who died in Baltimore Co., MD between 1720-1729. I will discuss him later. His 4 daughters are identified as a result of land transactions beginning in 1726. Reading the deeds, it is apparent that all his inheritance was eventually sold by the 4 daughters (or their widowers in the case of Judith who married Jonas Stalcop) to their cousin Philip (Cornelius' son) between 1726-1727. So if John had any sons, either they did not have any claims to the property by 1726 or they were not resident in Delaware and transactions exist elsewhere. To date, the only potential son for John is Jacob in MD. William Vanderveer - third son born around 1664/5. This one is too easy, he died without children. His wife remarried and also died childless. Jacobus Vandevear - youngest son of Jacop, born around 1667/8. He removed to Penn's Neck sometime between 1693-1698. Jacobus was first married to Catharina Kuckow, widow of Anders Berthilsson, then married to Catharina Forssen, widow of Stephen Tossawa. His Will and Church Records indicate that he had 3 sons to reach maturity: Jacob, William and HENRY, this being the second potential father of Mary. He died in 1726 and his second wife died within a year later. As with Jacop and Cornelius, there is no indication of children of a deceased child. Philip Van de Ver - eldest son of Cornelius born around 1685, left a Will which was proven in 1750. No Henry's, he only names sons John and Peter. No mention of children of a deceased child and no potential for a son born posthumously early enough to be Mary's father. Jacob Van de Ver - second son of Cornelius born around 1687, left a Will which was proven in 1739. Names sons John, Cornelius, Tobias and Peter. No Henry's, no mention of children of a deceased child and no potential for a posthumous child who could have been Mary's father. Johan Cornelisson Vandervear - died around 1717 in Fahlun, Delclaria, Sweden. His only daughter, Catharina, was born in November 1715. Johan's widow (Maria Stalcop) remarried to Hans Smit and returned to Delaware by 1720. Of the Smit children, all but one moved on to Frederick Co., MD by the 1740's and Catharina Vandevear married in Carrol Co., MD in 1738. William Vandever - fourth son of Cornelius was born between 1696-1712 (under 16 when his father wrote his Will in 1712). He married Margaretta Colesburg in 1728 and did not have any children named Henry either in his Will, which was proven in 1739, or in Church Records. The Will was not contested, no mention of children of a deceased child (his eldest was only 11 when he died) and he died too late for a posthumous son to be Mary's father. Jacob Vandevear - eldest son of Jacobus Vandevear of Penn's Neck, is the only known male in the third generation of the family to die before 1732 (our final target year). So, he is the only one that could have fathered a son posthumously. However, Jacob died in July 1729 and his widow Margaretta died the following November 1729. In the administration of their estates only daughter Magdalena and son Jacob are mentioned. No Henry, no posthumous birth. William Vandevear - second son of Jacobus Vandevear of Penn's Neck was born in 1720, so too young to father a child named Henry by the target year of 1732. John Vandever - eldest son of Philip, was born around 1712. He left a Will in the 1780's, no Henry's, no children of a child deceased, no potential for a posthumous child connection. Peter Vandever - second son of Philip, was born in 1715. He married Margareta Hoppman in 1738. Not a potential father of a Henry. John Vandiver - eldest son of Jacob who was son of Cornelius, was born around 1711. This John was married to Mary Justice and died in Frederick Co., MD between 1742-1760. His son John died unmarried in 1760 and left his property and that of his father (the subject John) to his sisters Rachel and Mary. No Henry's, etc. Cornelius Vandever - second son of Jacob who was son of Cornelius was born around 1712. He married Margaret Morton in 1738. No potential. What the above demonstrates is that there are only 2 potential Henry's and 1 what I will call a "way out there" and NO other potentials at all. Everyone is otherwise accounted for past the target year of 1732. I'll quickly discuss the "way out there". As mentioned above, John Vanderveer is only known to have had 4 daughters. He and Johan Cornelisson Vandervear who died in Sweden, are the only 2 individuals in range that did not leave a Will. There are records to indicate that the only children either had were their daughters and in the case of the elder John one son named Jacob who died in Baltimore Co., MD, probably before 1726. I suppose it is possible that John had many other children, but why there are no sons mentioned anywhere in any land transactions is what throws me off. For the eldest sibling - Jacob - to have sold his rights to his sisters prior to moving on to Maryland is more than feasible. Jonas Stalcop and Judith Vandever were married by 1714 and could very well have done just that. Jacob is found in Baltimore Co., MD by 1718. At that point he is a widower and remarrying to the widow Jane (Guinn) Gill. His own son Jacob is deceased by 1734 leaving 4 minor children. This younger Jacob was married to Susannah Veale, who remarried to Nicholaus Green. They settle his estate and name the minor children - John, William, Ann and Elizabeth. Setting aside piling more children on John Vanderveer when his estate was divided 100% by fewer than those attributed to him already, we are left with HENRY VANDEVER son of Cornelius and HENRY VANDEVEAR son of Jacobus. One thing worth mentioning is that there are no surprises in Salem Co. records. Every record you have sent me can too easily be attributed to an known and existing Vandever. The void of records is easily explained as the period when children were minors and their parents were deceased. By 1729 all adult male Vandevear's in Penn's Neck AND their widows were deceased leaving three minor male Vandevear's - William b. 1720; Henry b. 1725; and Jacob b.c. 1726. William would have been the first to reach legal age for many things (taxation, etc.) in 1736, so a 10 year void of records is not surprising. We know who Philip is, so the only question is - was the elder Henry b. btwn 1696-1712 (son of Cornelius) residing in Penn's Neck? Given everything available, I don't think there is any question. There were two Henry's in the third generation of the family and both eventually resided in Penn's Neck. One was married to Sarah Barber and died in 1749 with a minor son named Jacob. The other died in 1762 and had a daughter named Mary. Which was which? Here is my opinion and why. I believe the Henry who married Sarah Barber was the son of Cornelius. In the past I had assigned this Henry to Jacobus and just assumed that he had married Sarah in Wilmington because that is where her family was residing. I really had no explanation, though, and it makes more sense to say that Henry had grown up in Wilmington and married Sarah then removed to Penn's Neck. Further, there are a number of names that become very repetative and interesting very quickly which would point to Henry son of Cornelius being the one married to Sarah Barber. In his Will, written 2 February 1748/9 [emphasize the 9 because that is the book it falls in ... between December 1748 and April 1749] he names his wife and Peter Derickson as executors. When I first wrote you about this Will I was not certain, but have since proven this to be the son of Zacharias and Helena (Vanderveer) Dedricksson. Peter was born in 1715 and grew up "next door", so to speak, to Hendrick Vandever his first cousin in Wilmington. It is apparent to me that Sarah Barber was the one born in 1728, daughter of Barber and Peterson (see 1786 Register of the Swedesboro and Penn's Neck Parishes under entry for Henry Peterson). "Next door" to the Vanderveer property in Wilmington was that of Hendrick Peterson. His son Peter Peterson the Smith is mentioned in Cornelius' Will as his close friend. The Peterson's and Vandever's of Brandywine Hundred were close geographically and socially. In fact, I believe Philip Van de Ver's first wife was Elizabeth Peterson, daughter of Peter Peterson the Smith. It appears to me that the widow Sarah (Barber) Vandevear remarried to Henry Peterson of Penn's Neck (see Register again). All of these people from Sarah Barber to Peter Derickson point to Henry son of Cornelius. Why he went to Penn's Neck as well as when and how he acquired property would be the only question. Where Henry son of Jacob is concerned, you have something quite similar occur. There is something about his Will that even makes me think of a man who married young (around 17-18) had a daughter and was widowed. His witnesses were Penn's Neck locals - Biddle and Knutson - whom he would have known his entire life, just as Henry son of Cornelius knew Peter Derickson his entire life. That he owned property and left it all to his only daughter when he died at age 37-8 is not particularly surprising either. Concerning the petitioners in 1748. Note that the list is dated 25 April 1748. Either Henry could have been the one on the list, though I believe it was more likely the son of Jacobus, thus the father of Mary. Henry son of Cornelius does not appear in Church records anywhere other than marrying Sarah Barber. Of the two, he was the elder, but appears to be less interested in the Church than the younger son of Jacobus. The Henry that died in 1749 actually wrote his Will in February 1749 by the new calendar, it was entered as February 1748 old style. So between April and February he became ill, wrote his Will and died somewhere during the 7 months before it was proven in September. The winter of 1748 appears to me to be a "disease year". I say that because there are at least three deaths and/or illnesses prompting Wills within 4 months - William and Margareta (Vandervear) Van Nemen died in November 1748 and Henry Vandevear wrote his Will in February 1749. The same winter. Anyway, that was all to address the whole "miraculous recovery" question you had. I have seen individuals go just that quick on many other occassions. George Vandiveer paid his fees to operate a tavern in April 1764, received payment from the Neal Estate in May 1764, wrote his Will in August 1764, died by October 1764. A sudden illness or accident is obvious. What is not known is what exactly happened. The Inventory on his estate, by the way, did not occur until September 1765, only 11 months after it was proven! Delays in probate are not uncommon at any step without the pleasure of an explanation appearing in any records. Well, that is as far as I can go with any of this. I am actually going to change my database based on all of this. There are no sources other than those above for a Henry in 1749 or a Henry in 1762, so they could only be the two identified. Which is which I will leave to the hint of who would have been close to and thus trusting the individuals who witnessed their Wills.7

I did my best, and think I have the most pertinent information. This one is important to me, as it places this Vandervere in very close proximity to Wm. Biddles or Bettle's tavern, which was on Game Creek in Pennsneck, a long tributary of Salem Creek. I am still looking for some ties between these two families that would explain why Henry Vandeveir, in his will of 1760, would leave his daughter Mary in the custody of members of the Biddle family. I was thumbing page by page through H. Stanley Craig's "Salem County Genealogical Data, Vol. ll." last night, looking at jurors and other petty officials of office. Not everyone, I soon discovered, was in the index....so I sometimes go back with a fine tooth comb.
Anyway, just a couple of sightings of our guys in their natural habitat.
p. 128 Cobus Vandevear appears on the grand jury on June 26th and 27th of 1711.
I'm told they had to be at least 40 or better and landowners to qualify. Would that line up for this guy? Means he was b. no later than about 1671 for that to be true. I'll try to verify the qualifiers this week with Ellie, my buddy at the courthouse.
BTW, this is only the grand jurors list...not the lesser courts, which weren't printed here. These lists start Sept. 1706 through 1773, although I noted a 5 year gap at some point.
He appears again as Cobus VanDivear on p. 132, June 22, 1714. And that is it, no others appear. but hey, better than seeing them as defendants. - [S356] Swedish Lutheran Churches at Racoon and Penns Neck, p. 1-2.
