From other applications with an overlap of signatures and adjacent times, this tavern was located at Stephens Creek, Weymouth, Gloucester County, NJ
-----------------
Personal note: Jonas Steelman and John Veal are my ancestors from Dad's dad and Dad's mom, respectively.
-----------------
This seems to indicate that Enos, John, and Henry (and probably Platts) Veal still lived in the Mays Landing area before making their 1811 purchases from William Hollingshead in Buena. John and Enos already had some land there, as did their step-father, Benjamin Parsons, grandfather of the Benjamin Parsons signing this document. John Stewart's niece married John Veal's son. If this is John Stewart, Sr, however, then he is my ancestor as well. The signature of John Stewart, Senr., on an 1825 petition is very shaky, and it is not obviously the same or different from this signature.

Note that this Henry Veal must have been born by 1790 to sign this document. It appears to be the same signature as the Henry Veal affixed to Archibald Campbell's petition in 1825.

The Benjamin Parsons signature from Enos Veal's 1814 petition matches perfectly; however, the Henry Veal signature seems to be quite different from the ones on Steelman's and Campbell's petitions.

Mathias Veal signed Archibald Campbell's 1830 application. The same signature is on the 1831 Aquilla Stiles application. It appears that Mathias Veal then wrote the names following his in the same handwriting: John Veal, Archibald Campbell, jnr, Ephraim Stiles, Archibald Campbell Sen, and although slightly smaller than the other signatures, probably Henry Veal as well.

The same Thomas Doughty signed Campbell's petition in 1816. It is the same signature as Thomas Doughty, proprietor [Milmay] who signed in 1831, although in a much more feeble hand, nearing his death by 1834.

This Joseph Ingersul has the same signature as Joseph Ingersul Jur on a 1779 Samuel Snell applicaton. on 13 March 1811 at Gloucester Co., New Jersey.8

Caroline Viel 32
Caroline Viel 14
Emma Viel 5"
John Viel/Veal married Emmaline Johnson. They had a daughter named Caroline. Caroline is not a family name for any of that family unit's ancestral family as far as I can see.

John Veal's sister, Susannah, married Thomas Everingham. Thomas had a sister named Carolina/Caroline Everingham, and they lived nearby. It is my guess that the child of John Veal and Emmaline Johnson was named for John's brother-in-law's sister.

Emmaline died.

John Veal married second Caroline Everingham, sister of Thomas. They had a daughter Emma in honor of the deceased wife.

So the first daughter was named for the second wife, and the second daughter was named for the first wife, as far as I can tell.

Now this is significant for me because John and Emmaline's daughter, Caroline Veal (see picture), married TC Souder, a miller. John Veal and Tom Everingham at one time owned parts of the mills at Willow Grove. (Note that in 1850 Millville extended all the way to Willow Grove.) Then, they apparently went to a more southern part of Millville and worked as millers for TC Souder who ran the grist mill at Menantico ("Clarks Mill'), then went their separate ways. So the families were closely knit over a long period.

TC and Caroline Veal Souder's son, Harry Milton Souder, had a daughter Caroline, and she was my paternal grandmother.

Caroline Souder Bingham had a granddaughter named Carol in her honor. Carol is a nurse at a mission in Guatemala, and now there is a new Guatemalan baby named in her honor: Carolina, which seems to be the original form of the name.

Isn't life interesting?
