ALTON CEMETERY
I have photographed the photos to the best of my ability. Due to neglect, time and weather some of the stones in the cemetery are too hard to read. I know its important to see the whole headstone but in some cases I tried to get the information which is more important than the stone. So if the stone seems chopped that is why. Also a few of the stones have small shrubs growing in front of them so I could not get a photo of these stones. Other stones had fake flowers tied to them and it was impossible to get any information off those stones so I didn't get those stones either.
There is a book being put out by the (Peel County) O.G.S. for the Alton Cemetery and I would suggest if your family is one of the stones that can't be read that you buy the book. THIS BOOK IS NOW AVAILABLE FROM THE HALTON/PEEL OGS. PLEASE CHECK OUT THEIR WEBSITE.

Please enjoy the site. I hope everyone finds a relative or two. Please don't forget to sign my guestbook. Jot down your ancestors and maybe someone will be able to make a connection with you. Leave your e-mail address if you are looking for contacts to be able to get in touch with you.
*** If anyone would like another photo taken of the stones that they are researching just let me know and when I get a chance to go to the cemetery I will do another digital photo for you and send it via e-mail. ***

Alton Cemetery donated by Jas. McClellan, about the year 1832. An extra acre was bought from Walter McConnell for this cemetery, for the sum of $300.00, in 1927.
The plots were sold as family plots, at prices ranging from $5.00 to $20.00. (Note: these are present day charges.)
The first interment was made about 1832 or '33. Cannot find any information as to whom.
It has been roughly estimated by the undertaker that there are 600 burials in this cemetery, and it is still being used.
There are still plots for sale. Old families are still allowed to inter in the family plot. There is provision for perpetual care.
Alton Cemetery is owned by the Police Village.
