A regular Klondike in the way of a zinc discovery is reported from the vicinity seven miles southeast of Eureka Springs. Some as fine specimens of ore have been found there as have yet been unearthed in the great zinc belt. A Blasingame & Son of this place have large interests in the lands in that vicinity. In fact, these are the principal owners in the late rich discovery. Excitement is a fever heat in that part of the county. The men who have hold of the land will certainly find what there is in it.

Chief Engineer Lee of the railroad surveying corps was in town Sunday on his return to camp form St. Louis, where he had been called again on business with the company. He says that the organization of the company and arrangement for the construction of the road has been occupying the entire time of the men who propose to build the road lately, but that that part of their work is about complete and that active work on the road will surely begin at once.

        The entertainment and Christmas box at the church Monday evening was a complete success. The program was delightful from start to finish. The young folks acquitted themselves splendidly. The operetta was an unusual treat. Quite a handsone sum was realized for the Sunday School treasury.

Mr. Cole, father of Orin Cole of this place, died at Eureka Springs on last Saturday. His corpse was brought to the home of his son Sunday and Monday was taken to Gaither, Boone County for burial.

W. J. Lloyd, the Eureka Springs hardware merchant, sends a happy new year greeting to his many friends and customers from this end of the county and asks them to call and see some of his new bargains.

The effort to organize a Woodman of the World camp here is meeting with good encouragement. It is probable that an organization will be perfected early in January.

Dr. Scott and Joe A. Young of Denver were in town Thursday of last week and paid us a social call. They seemed to be enjoying life to the fullest extent.

The year 1900 will be a record breaker in the history of Green Forest. Purch yourself upon some high place and watch the town grow.

Misses Lulu and Grace Newton of Eureka Springs spent Christmas at this palce with their grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Miller.

Dr. T. J. Reynolds, the dentist, is here ready to answered all calls for dental work. Satisfaction guaranteed in every instance.

A letter form W. S. Purselly informs us that he has located on a farm near Valdasta, Texas.

Robert Blasingame is devoting all his time lately to his mineral intersests.

WHISKY ENDS HIS LIFE

Ed McGowen; the Miller, Dies Suddenly on Tuesday Night.

        Ed McGwoen, who has been for some time past employed as miller by the Green Forest Roller Mill Company, died on Tuesday night as the result of a drunken spree.
        The facts as we hurriedly catch them form the inquest over his body, which is in session as we go to press, seem to be about as follows:
        He had been drinking heavily since Christmas eve. His conduct became such that the management of Hotel Pleasant, where he boarded, could put up with it no longer and put him out. Marshal Carter found him on the street in his condition, and for want of a better place, took him to the town cooler, where he was kept for some time. He was given a cup of coffee and revived up. The boys at the mill came after him with a wagon and took him to the mill, giving him a bunk in the office by a fire. He walked to the wagon when they started off with him, but on the way he became unconscious and remained so. The boys supposed he was simply “dead drunk,” and that he would come around all right, but when they went to see about him at 1 o'clock Wednesday morning he was dead.
        McGowen was about 60 years old. He had been known here for a number of years, coming here for a short stay occasionally, but no one knows anything of his family or relatives. He was a very peculiar man and never said much of his personal affairs. He was given to drink and had gone on a number of sprees here. He was honest in his business dealings and was a man of fine literary turn of mind. He was an exceptionally fine miller, that being his profession.
        The circumstance is deeply deplored by the community. It is just another of the thousands of sad stories that follow the use of strong drink.
