Henry Purgett, Revolutionary War Soldier
1778-79, 1781

Henry was drafted into the Continental Army in 1778 in Hampshire County. His company marched to the mouth of Beaver, Pennsylvania where they built a fort called Fort McIntosh at a place where the town of Beaver now stands. Fort McIntosh: The story of its history and restoration of the site. After that they marched to Tuscarawas on the head waters of the Muskingum where they built Fort Laurens. He then returned home having been called into service for six months.

In the year 1781 Henry was drafted to go after the Tories in the County of Hardy and fought two or three weeks. This was known as Claypools Rebellion. John Claypool (or Claypoole) of in Hardy County led Claypool's Rebellion against the American Revolution. Governor Thomas Jefferson ordered cavalry to put down the insurrection in a more colorful episode of the war.
