The Pine Church is located about two miles south of Purgittsville. It was built by 1814, possibly as early as 1792. One of the oldest burials in the grounds is 1834. While the origin of the church is usually associated with the Church of the Brethren (Dunkers), it was probably used by ministers of different denominations. It is believed that the church was used by people of German descent, such as the German Baptist Brethren and the German Methodists. The building was also used as a school. By about 1870, the church was mainly used by the Dunkers. Some of the earliest families who were Dunkers were: Arnold, Bowman, Barnhouse, Biser, Fleming, Friedly, George, Kelley, Hendrickson, roderick, Leatherman, Ludwick, High, Whiteman, Landes, Rinker, Purgitt, Tucker, Shockey and Shoemaker. There are thirty-six Shoemaker burials in the Pine Cemetery. Information from Allegheny Passage.
