Henry Adam Gemberling

THE NAME The name appears variously in historical records and private papers as Gamberling, Gamperlin, Gamberlin, Chamberlin, Champerlin, Champerling, Chamberling, Kemberling, Kimberling, Gemberlin, Gamberlin, Kamberlin, Gemperlin, Gemberlien, Gemperlen,etc. The most common use of the name today is Gemberling and Gemperling.

THE EUROPEAN HOME OF THE FAMILY The Gemberling family came from Assweiler, in the Palatine Province of Saarland, Germany along the Rhine River. Several Gemberlings came to America during the 1700's.

THE PIONEER IMMIGRANTS OF THE NAME
The book called "Pennsylvania German Pioneers" shows the first of the Gemberlings to enter the port of Philadelphia was (Hans)Peter Gemperling, probably better know as "Peter"(15 Mar 1730/31). Peter was the son of Johann Peter Gemperling. Johann Peter Gemperling (abt 1676-2 Jun 1739). Peter was the first of the Gemperlings later Gemberlings to arrive in America. He arrived on the British ship "Robert and Alice", Captain Goodman, Master, from Rotterdam Holland, the usual port of embarkation for the German emigrants. The German emigrants traveled up the Rhine River to London and then on to Holland where they board the ships and sail for America or Nova Scotia. Peter took the English Oath of Allegiance at Philadelphia on 3 Sep 1749, the main arrival port fort he German and Irish immigrants. The ship list designated the passengers as "Palatinates".
The next of the Gemperlings to come to America were Johann Charles and Johann Paul, brothers, commonly called "Carl" and "Paul". They sailed from Rotterdam, touched at Cowes, Isle of Wright, and arrived at Philadelphia in the British ship "Neptune", Captain Waire, Master. They took the Oath of Allegiance to the English government at the Philadelphia Court House on 30 Sep 1754. The ship list gave the origianal homes of the passengers as Palatinates, Darmstadters, and Zweybrechers. Carl and Paul left behind their parents and younger brother Johann Jacob Gemberling. Paul had moved out of PA. by the 1790 census. Paul kept the German spelling of his name Gemperling and moved south to Virginia where there are many descendants scattered throughout the Shenandoah Valley, other states and the western states.
The last of the Gemberling's known to enter the port of Philadelphia between the years 1727 and 1808, was Jacob Gemberling, he travelled with older Jacob Gemberling. Some speculate they were father and son, others say the younger Jacob was the son of Samuel and that this may have have been, a cousin or previously unknown uncle. Johann Jacob the brother of Carl and Paul who came over in 1754. The two Jacob's sailed from Rotterdam, Holland, in the British ship "Polly", Captain Robert Porter, Master, and arrived at Philadelphia, where they took the English Oath of Allegiance on 26 Sep 1765.
There was a sister of the three brothers whom also came to America, her name is not known at this time and it is not known if she traveled with one of her brothers, a husband, or as an indentured servant.
Jacob (1736-1824)married Catharine(abt 1749-1810)of Lebanon County, PA daughter of Frederick Wolfensberger of Alsace, France/Germany. Jacob and Catherine settled in what today is called Snyder County,PA where they raised their 8 children. Of these children George B. Gemberling (1776-1860)is of my branch.

SAMUEL GEMBERLING
Samuel Gemberling was born in Germany, in Assweiler in the Palatine Province of Saarland, along the Rhine River, about the year 1704. Samuel was married to Eva Maria Magdalena Hann on 9 May 1726 in Assweiler. Samuel was the father of (Johann)John Charles, John Paul, and John Jacob, commonly called Carl, Paul, and Jacob, and 4 children whom died at an early age. There was also a daughter that emigrated to America as well as 2 sons and 1 daughter that stayed in Assweiler.

JACOB GEMBERLING (1736-1824)
Jacob Gemberling (son of Samuel) was born in Assweiler in the Palatine Province of Saarland, along the Rhine River, Germany on 17 Oct 1738. During the spring or summer of 1765, Jacob embarked for America at Rotterdam, Holland, after a tiresome trip down the Rhine River. He came in the English ship "Polly", under the command of Captain Robert Porter, Master, touching at Cowes, Isle of Wight, before putting out for the port of Philadelphia, PA, where the ship arrived on 26 Sep 1765 and took he the Oath of Allegiance.
Jacob was listed as a resident of Heidelberg Township, Lancaster (now Lebanon) County, Pa., in 1771. In 1779, and again in 1782, he was listed as a farmer and tavernkeeper at Schaefferstown in Heidelberg Township. In the latter year he was listed as the non-resident owner of 300 acres of land in Penn Township of Northumberland (now Snyder) County, Pa. This land lay about a mile and a half west of what is today the town of Selinsgrove, and a descendant, A. Ira Gemberling has been the owner of part of the original holdings of Jacob Gemberling, for many years. It is believed that Jacob bought the holdings of his brother, Paul, or maybe land formerly owned by his brother, Carl. Paul, at least, owned land and lived in Penn Township as early as the year 1776. The Juanita and Susquehanna Valley History states that Jacob Gemberling and family came to what is now Penn Township in 1782, but the records seem to indicate that it was a year or two later. Jacob was assessed as a resident of Penn Township for the first time in the year of 1785, probably the same year that he came up from Schaefferstown. In 1789, Jacob was a Fence Viewer in Penn Township, in 1800, he was one of the viewers to locate a road across the Isle of Que from Selinsgrove to the River. In 1801, he was one of the contributors to the fund for the erection of the First Lutheran and Reformed Church of Selinsgrove. He was one of the leading members of the Reformed congregation of this church, and was one of the three men of that faith who served with three men of the Lutheran faith as a building committee. Jacob's son, Philip, was also a contributor to the fund for the erection of the church. One record claims that Jacob was born 1738, but one that is considered accurate, states that he died on May 1824, aged 88 years. This indicates that the year of his birth was 1736. His wife Catherine (Wolfersberger/Wolfensberger)died at the age of 70 years, probably about the year 1810 making her DOB about 1740. Both are buried in the Old Lutheran Cemetery formerly Sharon Lutheran in Selinsgrove, Jacob's has a DAR plaque hers is unmarked. Their son Philip and his two wives are also buried there. Philip bought most of his father's large land holdings. One record states that Jacob and wife had fourteen children, and another states that they had six when they moved to Penn Township. This writer has been able to locate the names of eight children who grew to maturity. It is possible that the others died in infancy.
At some period during the Revolutionary War, Jacob was a Private in the 5th Company, 3rd Battalion of the Lancaster County Militia. His company was commanded by Captain Nicholas Lutz. On 8 Jul 1782, Jacob Gemberling was a Private in Captain John Moore's Company, 3rd Battalion of the Lancaster County Militia. Jacob Gemberling, Frederick, Peter, and Philip Wolfensberger cousins of Catherine's, were members of the same company at the same time. All of the eastern part of Heidelberg Township, took the Oath of Allegiance to the Colonies at Lancaster, PA., on 22 Jun 1778.

GEORGE B. GEMBERLING (1776-1860) George B. Gemberling (Jacob, Jacob) was born in Heidelberg Township, Lancaster, now Lebanon County, Pa., 6 Mar 1776, and died in Penn Township, Snyder County, Pa., 6 Jun 1860. His mother was Catherine Wolfensberger. George came to what is now Penn Township with his parents about the year 1785. In 1798, he married Anna Weiss (Rice, Reese, Reiss), who was born 8 Jul 1776(tombstone shows DOB as 1796), and died 26 Apr 1836. His second wife was Barbara Kempel, born 2 Oct 1788, and died in Penn Township, Snyder County, 24 Oct 1874. All three are buried in the Salem Cemetery in Penn Township. George was a carpenter and farmer, and lived in Penn Township for 75 years. He was superintendent of construction of the second building at Row's (Salem) Church. The cornerstone was laid 7 Aug 1814, and the building dedicated on 12 May 1816. George was a member and officer of the Reformed congregation, and one of it's leading contributors. Note: There is a discrepency of dates for Anna's, IF she were born 1796 as her tombstone states (there is a photo my cousin has in her possession she took while in PA) then Anna can't possibly be the mother of most of these children. This would mean that George was married before Anna. Also there are many web sites with information on the Gemberlings out there that state Barbara Kempel as Sephares' mother. If this were true then he would have been born 3 yrs before Anna died and been illegitimate. There is no proof of this, all indications are that Anna was his mother. Research is continuing to being done.

PHILIP GEMBERLING, SR. (1773-1859) Philip Gemberling (Jacob, Jacob) was born in Heidelberg Township, Lancaster (now Lebanon) County, PA., 27 Jul 1773, and died in Penn Township, Snyder County, Pa, 13 Oct 1859. His mother was Catherine Wolfensberger. Philip came to what is now Penn Township with his parents when he was about 12 years old. As a young man, he bought 250 acres of his father's large land holdings, where Philip lived his entire life. In 1793, he married Eva, a daughter of George Glass, a Revolutionary War soldier. She was born on 15 Jul 1773, probably in what is now Snyder County, and died 13 Jul 1815. She is interred in the old cemetery of the First Lutheran Church in Selinsgrove, PA. Eva was the mother of 5 sons and 4 daughters. Philip's second wife was Judith Fetter, daughter of Jacob Fetter (Fedder or Feather). She was born 10 Dec 1794, and died 28 Aug 1862. Judith had 6 sons and 5 daughters. Philip, like his father was an active member of the Reformed Church, having joined the congregation of that faith at Kratzerville, PA., in 1794. At this time no Reformed congregation existed at either Salem or Selinsgrove. In 1801, when the First Lutheran and Reformed church was erected on the premises, some rivalry having existed as to who would be the first to supply material. He was a man of keen business foresight, and held various positions of public trust. In 1815, he was one of the viewers to locate the Pine Street Bridge in Selinsgrove. In 1824, and again in 1829, he was one of the road supervisors for Penn Township. In 1844, he was one of the township auditors. In 1855, when the Reformed congregation in Selinsgrove decided to build it's own edifice, he was one of the heaviest contributors to the fund for the erection of the German Reformed Church. Philip, his two wives, and his parents are buried in the old cemetery of the First Lutheran Church in Selinsgrove. At the time of his death, "The Reformed Church Messenger" carried a long article on the life of this man of faith and works. Judith Fetter and Philip were married 16 Mar 1816. CHILDREN with EVA GLASS

SAMUEL GEMBERLING Samuel Gemberling (Jacob, Jacob) was born in what was then Heidelberg Township, Lancaster, now Lebanon County, PA. His mother was Catherine Wolfensberger. About 1785, Samuel came to what is now Penn Township, Snyder County, with his parents. He married ___ and it is supposed that he and wife are buried at White Deer, Union County, PA. SARAH GEMBERLING, wife of JACOB MOYER
Sarah Gemberling (Jacob, Jacob) was born in what was then Heidelberg Township, Lancaster County, now Lebanon County, PA. Her parents came to Penn Township, now Snyder County in 1785. Sarah's mother was Catherine Wolfensberger. Sarah married Jacob Moyer, and it is believed that they lived somewhere in Union County, PA.

MARY (POLLY) GEMBERLING, wife of FREDERICK ESTERLINE
Mary Gemberling (Jacob, Jacob) was born about 1786, in what is now Penn Township, Snyder County, Pa., and died near Woodward, Center County, PA., about 1826. her mother was Catherine Wolfensberger. Mary married Frederick Esterline, a carpenter, who was born about 1778, and died about 1826. Frederick was assessed in Penn Township for the first time in 1799. He was Constable of Penn Township for the years 1813, 1814, and 1815. In 1816, he bought the old (first) Row's (Salem) Church at a public sale for $24. Some suppose that he was a son of Jacob "Esterly" who served in Captain John Clarks Company of the Northumberland County Associators in 1776, or of Christopher Esterline, who lived in Dauphin County in 1790, according to the U.S. Census of that year. Mary was mentioned in her father's will, made in 1821, for a special award. It is supposed that she and her husband moved to the Penn's Valley, Center County, PA., about the year 1820, where both are said to have died within a short time of each other in the years of 1825 or 1826. It is supposed that they are buried in one of the older cemeteries of that section.

SEPHARES GEMBERLING (1833-1918)
Sephares Gemberling (George B., Jacob, Jacob) was born in what is now Penn Township, Snyder County, PA., 29 Jan 1833, and died in Selinsgrove, Snyder County, 16 Sep 1918. His mother was Barbara S. Kempel. On 26 Dec 1854, he married Rosa Ann Picard, who was born 31 Dec 1832 and died 3 Feb 1902. Both are buried in the Union Cemetery at Selinsgrove, Pa. Sephares was an outstanding member of the Reformed Church and the Republican party, and a leader in every respect. For many years Sephares operated the old Gemberling farm, along the Selinsgrove-Lewistown Highway, about two miles west of Selinsgrove. In 1936, this farm was owned and operated by his son A. Ira Gemberling. This farm has been in possession of the Gemberling family for more than 150 years.

Savilla Gemberling (Jonathan, George B., Jacob, Jacob) was born on ___ 1847, in what is now Penn Township, Snyder County, Pa., and died in Selinsgrove, Snyder County, Pa, in 1929. Her mother was Sarah Bickhart. On 7 Oct 1869, Savilla married Solomon App, a native of Monroe Township, Snyder County, Pa. Solomon was born on ___ 1851, and died in Monroe Township, on ___ 1924. Solomon was a farmer. He and wife were active members of the Lutheran Church. Both are buried in the Union Cemetery at Selinsgrove, Pa.

Elizabeth Gemberling (Jonathan, George B., Jacob, Jacob) was born in what is now Penn Township, Snyder County, Pa., in 1846, and died in 1902. Her mother was Sarah Bickhart. About 1860, she married Francis Artley (Erdly), who was born on 19 Aug 1840, and died 3 Jul 1874. Later she married Henry Gay.
GEORGE RAPHAEL GEMBERLING (1855)
George R. Gemberling (Sephares, George B., Jacob, Jacob) was born in Penn Township, Snyder County, Pa., on 23 Sep 1855. His mother was Rosa Ann Picard. On 25 Dec 1879, George married Emma Reinard of the same township in which he was born.
BARBARA JANE GEMBERLING, wife of EMMETT WHITE
Barbara J. Gemberling (Sephares, George B., Jacob, Jacob) was born in Penn Township, Snyder County, Pa., on 22 Oct 1856. Her mother was Rosa Ann Picard. On 24 Jun 1888, Barbara married Emmett White, who was born 28 Dec 1854. She died at Milton, Pa. on 14 Feb 1938, and is buried at Selinsgrove, PA.

HENRY ADAM GEMBERLING (1857 - 1937) Henry A. Gemberling (Sephares, George B., Jacob, Jacob) was born in Penn Township, Snyder County, Pa., on 29 Dec 1857. His mother was Rosa Ann Picard. Henry's first wife was Anna Weaver(1859-1889?). The second, Ida B. Rentfrow. The third, Sophia, daughter of Philip Blecker of Selinsgrove, Pa. Henry had no children with his third wife. Henry lived in some of the western states in his younger days, but about 1900 returned to live in Selinsgrove, where he lived until his death in 1937. He was a laborer, and contractor in cement and concrete work, in his latter years. He was a member of the Reformed Church and the Odd Fellows Lodge. He lived on South Market Street, Selinsgrove. Henry married Anna Weaver 21 Sep 1881 in Elkhart, In. Anna was 3 months pregnant when she died from bleeding to death, probably a miscarriage. After Anna's death (1889?)Grace and Sephares spent much of their childhood living with their grandparents Sephares and Rosa Anna.

MARGARET E. GEMBERLING, wife of WILLIAM ABROSE FISHER
Margaret E. Gemberling (Sephares, George B., Jacob, Jacob) was born in Penn Township, Snyder County, Pa, 19 Nov 1859. Her mother was Rosa Ann Picard. On 24 Dec 1878, Margaret married, William a., son of George Fisher. William was her second cousin. They were members of the Lutheran Church and the Republican party. About 1900, William and his family moved to New Columbia, Pa., and later to the town of Milton, Pa. William was a successful farmer, both in Penn Township, and later at New Columbia. He was born in Penn Township, 9 Feb 1853, and died at Milton, Pa., 21 Sep 1931. Mrs. Fisher lived in Milton, Pa.
